All the RPGs out there are either fantasy (zombies, magic, dragons, etc.) or post-apocalyptic (zombies, energy weapons, etc) type of genres...are there any computer RPGs out there with a modern setting with modern firearms and stuff?

Jagged Alliance 2 was great (gotta fire it up again) but I played it through at least a dozen times or more.

The more guns the more better.

Deus Ex may be 3 years old, but just last night I downloaded a new mod for it: the Cassandra Project.

The story has nothing to do with the original DX storyline, and takes place in modern day England. You take on the role of Charlotte Williams, super spy with augmented abilities. A trip to the armory and you can get yourself a G36, SIG P228, SPAS-12, and others!

Another intersting fact is that one of the characters in the story mentions Leonidas and Xerxes, which I found to be pretty interesting.

I was cruising some game sites and some of the new RPGs on the market sounds really impressive (Neverwinter nights, et al) but I just can't warm up to magic spells and stuff.

I can't find my JA2 at home :(

I think I'm not really into adrenaline type games like Rainbow Six which is about as much as I can take, but play it for the guns and overall tacticality. I played the first Aliens vs Predator at my friends' and it was too much for me. I want to relax, not get a sensory overload...jeez.

I'd prefer a newer game, something that came out in the last year or so.

I might check out that game w/ pirates just because it has guns (ok blackpowder pistols) and isn't set in a fictional world.

Fallout, Fallout2, and Fallout Tactics...
Sorry, definitely post-apocalyptic...

Supposedly there's going to be a JA 3 skunk.

Also, you ever played Day of Defeat ?

Not an RPG though. I hate RPG's. Used to like them 'back in the day' before they got so complicated and time consuming.

I am not sure if they're RPG or FPS but Operation Flashpoint, Operation Flashpoint Red Hammer, and Operation Flashpoint Resistence are all great games set only 10 years back using modern weapons and tactics. Delta Force 5 Blackhawk Down is ok, not great by far but not horrible either. I'm Going In(Project IGI)2 is also so so. There really arent many RPGs or FPS with MODERN weapons (at least not yet that is) Operation Flashpoint 2 which has a release date of 2003 or 2004 goes back into Vietnam. Novalogic is making a couple new Delta Force games too.

Since you were asking a question I actually knew something about I quit lurking and posted here for the first time.

All the Tom Clancey's Rainbow Six Games are IMHO the most realistic if modded correctlly. Urban ops, Black thorn (Add Ons) are definately my favorites. Search for Lloyd's mods and use them and you will not be disapointed. There latest series, Ghost Recon also rocks for realism. If you have high speed Internet try the Army's free game, Americas Army. It is very accurate in detail and getting better all the time.

I hope I helped Answer your question.

I'll second the Americas Army game. Free to download, and pretty accurate.

I'm sorry, you just aren't going to find many modern RPGs. That being said, I'll second SJs suggestion for the Fallout games. You can get a Fallout/Fallout2 dual jual case at Wal-Mart for $10. Not sure where you'd get Fallout Tactics, but it isn't nearly as good as the others anyway.

No multiplayer, no intense action, etc, I want character development and a good story with guns.

I have all the Rainbow games and wish they had more RPG elements. Ghost Recon you got a point for completing a mission but that was kinda lame.

Does Op Flashpoint have any RPG elements?

As far as RPG's go, the only games I can think of that have guns in them are Anachronox, Anarchy Online (a MMORPG), and the Fallout series (which are supposed to be insanely good).

I second the motion for Fallout and Fallout 2. They are post-apocalyptic and have energy weapons, but you can stick with firearms.

I too liked Fall out I, and II immensly (cheap too $10-20). It is one of those underated game with cult status. You can tell this game is made with genuine love for the game by the designers. This game is somewhat similar to legendary pre-online RPG Ultima series.

Best parts of the games are:

-It has lot of cools guns (from lowly home made rifle to FN FAL (Full auto!), Jack Hamer shotgun , HK G11 and CAWS, and my favorite 9mm steyr AUG smg).
-For some reason all the pistols in post apocalyptic world uses 10 MM :D !!!
-You can kill anything from Giant cock roach to innocent town children (you get 'child killer' label on your reputation, and Kharma drops dramatically).
-You can actually buy drug (called jet) and become 'addict'.

Funniest parts of the games are:

-When you click on the game object 'Guns and Bullet' magazine, it reads: "You learn nothing new, Nothing really helpful except for somewhat biased reviews." ( I think game designer was definitely into guns.)
-You can actually go to whore house and select between 5 different 'services' and waste money on it. Also you can get it on with other characters (same or opposite sex).
-After beating the game you can become a porn star at the porn studio, and appear on the movie 'PULL OUT, the post apocalyptal bigalow'.:D

Nothing is more satisfying than watching all four of the bad guys' upper tolsos ripped to pieces (with very realistic bullet impact/blood noise) with realistic preban rifle/machineguns.

I have to admit to being a big Neverwinter Knights fan.
The module that cames with the game is nothing compared to the modules that you can download for free.
There is the Monty Python's Holy Grail module... Most fun I have had playing games in a long time. Then there is the Dreamcatcher series... excellent. A must for NWN fans. It's in 5 parts. Great story line.
It's tactical in the sense that Lord of the Rings is tactical... in that middle earth way. I guess.

But a tactical roll playing game? Fallout series is your best bet. Well, there is another one... Archanium or something like that.

Go with the Fallout series, I have both of them, but I haven't really gotten in to them since I crave action. But for an RPG with firearms, and a great storyline to boot, get the Fallout Value Pack with Fallout 1&2.

Skunkabilly,

You looking for a true RPG or a FPS (first person shooter)? Most of the games listed are FPS's Like America's Army and Dues Ex.

Forgot about Arcanum. It's not exactly modern either, it's set during an industrial revolution in a very Tolken-esque world. All kinds of guns, if that's the path you choose, but it has a lot of magic and medieval weaponry, too.

Just a heads up, Fallout 3 is in development for the PC right now. It's shaping up to be worse than the first two RPGs, but it'll probably provide a lot of what you're looking for. Probably won't be out for another year or more, though.

I went to my buddies' place tonight and played a few min of Neverwinter Nights and watched another guy play Deus Ex (sp?)

Neverwinter looked well made but I couldn't warm up to the theme, but didn't spend much time with it, I was really sleepy.

Watching my friend play Dues gave me motion sickness....I only get it when I watch other people play....

I don't know why I can't like the dungeons and zombies thing, I really feel like I'm missing out, but I just can't like it.
