My Kimber Tac Pro II

is a good balance of size and weight. Four inch Barrel, full sized grip, and aluminum frame. The Smith Es is just about the same size and weight. I would be temped to try the Smith over the Kimber at this point because my kimber was not reliable out of the box. The smith is a little cheaper depending on where you buy it and it seems like a quality piece.

Compact .Colt Defender. Commander size . LTW Colt Commander Used Dan Wesson CBOB if you can find one But other wise out of your price range with new pricing

TimC, those raptor grips are wicked cool.

Clarence, that Ed Brown Special Forces ought to have a name and the worn blueing just makes it that much better.

She's a beaut isn't she? I say that she's a she because a guy just couldn't be that beautiful.

What do you think I should name her?

To the OP . . . "Kimber, Sig or Colt?"

Any of the three will do just as well . . . as long as you get a specimen that shoots without malfunction. Most folks prefer to put 500 malfunction-free rounds through any automatic before we would consider carrying it for self defense.

You'll hear praise . . . AND horror stories about SPECIMENS of each brand. If ya get a bad one, and don't know how to tweak the magazines . . . sell it on Gun Broker and find another.

Mine is a 3" barreled, original issue aluminum framed Kimber Ultra CDP (pre-Series II) from about 2000. It is ultra-reliable and very accurate. Night sights are also a welcome feature on this model, as is the radical "meltdown" treatment (not offerered to this extreme anymore) and the checkered front strap and ambi-safety (I'm a lefty). As you can see by the photo, this Kimber Ultra CDP has been carried a lot. The last time? Today!

Prior to this purchase I was a Colt fan, and actually traded a Colt Combat Elite for the CCW-sized Kimber. (Don't worry, Colt purists, my customized Colt Combat Elite had tens of thousands of rounds through it in competitions and practice and was pretty much shot loose by the time I traded it on the CCW gun).

All three brands you mentioned make decent guns.

Thank you all again for your input. I decided to ease my decision and stay with my Glock's for the time being and ended up walking out with a Remington 700 ADL 7mm.

Planning on trying a few rentals at the range to see what feels right before I take the leap.

Again many thanks.

I like officer's size .45's, won't get into brand war, commander lenght barrel and short grip . Grip size is the problem with ccw.
Next is weight, so imo an alloy frame cco size is for me.

You should try the Dan wesson CBOB it is a series 70 pistol.. no firing pin block and it is of custom quality..

I use a Kimber Custom II for everything including carry.
I've carried a Kimber Custom I for about 15 years. Before that, I carried an Argentine M1927 (basically a 1930's-era Colt, made in Argentina on Colt machinery under Colt supervision.)
