I just bought my first handgun yesterday and am working on getting my concealed permit and just was needing some help with a question about the address when applying for the permit...

I am a college student, so the address on my driver's license is my permanent home address, which is in a different county and city altogether. Should I go home and apply for a permit at the circuit court there, or apply for one here. I guess technically I should have updated my driver's license when I changed addresses and moved into my house here, but it's only for school so I didn't go that way...

Thanks for the help!

Edited: I live in Virginia, by the way if that has any bearing.

i am no expert about the law. but i would just look the info up on the internet. most counties post the information pertaining to firearms on their websites. also if you are receiving mail at your new address then you should transfer your driver license to reflect that address. you may not have to pay a lot to change your address if they can issue you a sticker to place on the back of your license allowing you to post your new addy. i went to the motor vehicle when i moved and the lady gave me a sticker so i could scribble in my new address. so my license has the old address i was living at with a sticker that allowed me to place my current address. just ask anyway to see what they say. well good luck and happy shooting...... stay alert, stay alive...............

I did some research into the Virginia application. I see that beside your current residential address, you must also attached a list of all addresses within the last 5 year period.

I would use your home address, unless you plan on living in the college house you are in after you graduate. I don't really think it makes a difference since the permit is for the entire state of Virginia.

Here is some information pertaining to the address from the Virginia State Police website:

"The address on my Resident Concealed Handgun Permit is no longer correct. Is my permit still valid?
Yes, but you may request a replacement permit if you wish. The clerk of a circuit court that issued a valid concealed handgun permit shall, upon presentation of the valid permit and proof of a new address of residence by the permit holder, issue a replacement permit specifying the permit holder's new address."

Hope this helps.

I live in Virginia, by the way if that has any bearing.
When you say "live in VA", do you mean home address, school address, or both?

No expert here, but I think I might stick with your home address and forget 'bout the school address, assuming you're still located in VA?
A couple of links that might help?
VA State Police Firearms/Concealed Handguns
VCDL-as a VA resident, you might want to check 'em and their links/info out & subscribe to their free e-mails!
Places Where Carrying Prohibited (at bottom of page)

If you're new to the game, might I suggest you get your hands on 'bout anything Massad Ayoob has written?
After all, knowing the laws on when, where you're justified to shoot is as important as learning to shoot!

When I say live in Virginia yes I mean both go to school and permanent address in VA. The permanent address is about 2 hours away, which isn't too far but I'd rather apply with my current address since I do have electric bills, proof of residency, etc. whereas for my permanent address that is listed on my driver's license, I haven't had any utilities or proof of residency there in about 3 years, but have been moving from apt to apt, etc. due to being in school.

To the other responses, I have done a ton of searching on the internet about this, as well as on this forum, but nothing that I have come across has really touched on this particular subject. I will be moving from this address that I'm at now within a few weeks too, which is another concern. I don't want to wait for the new address because I would like to be able to carry as soon as possible.

Most people tend to say it's a good idea for the address on your license and the one on your permit to match, however if you move to another address after your initial permit has been issued it is NOT required to notify them of a change of address, although it is suggested.

I'm just wondering if I am going to have to make a 2 hour trip to do the initial permit stuff or if they would even accept an application in a different county when my drivers license doesn't match the address I'm applying for a permit with. It makes sense that since it's for the whole state, it wouldn't matter which county you applied in, but at the same time I can see them being picky about applying for a permit in the county that you currently reside or that is on your driver's license (which is typically supposed to have the address of where you currently reside as well, although mine does not).

FWIW, you can download the form here.

From the VA State Police Site
Change of Address
The clerk of a circuit court that issued a valid concealed handgun permit shall, upon presentation of the valid permit and proof of a new address of residence by the permit holder, issue a replacement permit specifying the permit holder's new address. The total amount assessed for processing a replacement permit due to a change of address shall not exceed $10, with such fees to be paid in one sum to the person who accepts the information for the replacement permit.

I don't have a permit yet though, this would be applying for the first time.

And yes I have the form and everything, thanks for the links - just wondering where to take it, circuit court here or back home where the permanent addr is on my license.

Do you have training that qualifies for VA CHP?
If not, your first step is getting something on paper that shows you've taken VA CHP recognized training.

In my town the city recreation department offered free hunter safety courses (recognized), but I prefered to pay $50 to an NRA instructor to get the course outta the way in one day (and the course was MUCH more geared towards CHPs than hunting safety)!

And yes I have the form and everything
Check the form you have with the PDF linked to make sure it's the current version.
They just updated the form within the last few weeks.

Yes I do have training that qualifies me I've already taken the firearms safety class recognized by VA circuit courts.

Did you call the issuing agency or stop in and ask what they'd prefer? We can speculate, but they'll actually ANSWER the question! ;)

Many years ago (in a different state), I was issued a license to carry with my address listed as my on-campus dorm room. I didn't have a drivers' license from that state and wasn't even a resident. I just went to the Sheriff's office, asked how to proceed, and they told me what to write.

Virginia may treat the CCW permit in a manner similar to Georgia, where you're not required to change the license address when you move within the State. That's the question I would ask them. If that's the case toss a coin........

yeah I'm gonna head up there tomorrow to the circuit court here and just see what they say, couldn't hurt...If they tell me I can't I'll just have to drive I guess. I'll post back when I can get an answer.
