Does anyone know of a good shoulder holster that I can find that will fit well under a suit coat? I need one for a 1911 or Walther P99. If anyone knows of a good brand that makes a good holster that can be concealed under a suit coat I would love some suggestions. Thanks!

I've ben happy with a Galco Jackass rig, it's pretty comfortable for all day wear. I have one each for a SIG 239 and another for a Colt LtWt Cmdr.

Depending on your build and current tailor, you amy want to condsider going up a jacket size so you won't print. HTH.

Just met a local range marshal while shooting this past weekend who couldn't say enough good things about the Galco shoulder rig he uses to carry a Walther PPK and two magazines. "I put it on in the morning and forget it's there all day long," he said. "They aren't cheap, but they are the best thing out there." His comments were enough for me to take a look at the Galco web page and see what I'm missing.

Another vote for the Galco. I have one for my USP and really like it. All day comfort.

i'd recommend the Ken Null SMZ for the Walther P99...he won't make it for the 1911.

i have tried one for the P99, but i did use one for a Beretta 92 and it worked really well

Galco Miami Classic. Best shoulder system I've ever seen. I have two. I use one for my 1911's and one for my Walther PPKS. Excellent quality and well worth the money.

Galco makes an extraordinarily good shoulder holster system. The pic is from their site and the specific holster would take care of a Walther nicely.

Used to wear a shoulder holster and I add this for info only. Once in place you just can't take off your outer garments for comfort sake. FWIW! I changed to other, more flexible, CCW systems. But a good shoulder holster is just great.

Galco, Alessi, and Sam Andrews (among others) make very good horizontal rigs.

For minimized printing, I've found that vertical carry works well (for me. Thin-torsoed/shallow chested). A Null rig for your P99 should have very little printing involved - but it does require a collared shirt/jacket for a cover garment. Offers superb retention, by the way.

I recently purchased a Vega vertical shoulder rig to carry my 1911. Works well enough so far, does require a belt tie-down for the holster side. I love the x-harness.

Have you ever worn a s/h? Might want to see if you can borrow one to try for awhile, I find them very uncomfortable personally. But, I'm rather <ahem> "girthy".

Another two thumbs up for the Galco System. I've set up a Galco shoulder holster system with my primary gun (45 ACP) under my left arm pit (I'm right handed) and my back up (9mm CZ-75) under my right arm pit. You do have to wear a litter larger coat, or you will look like one fat dude that can't put his arms down to his side.

Good Luck

Galco thumb-break holsters and Condition 1

While everyone is raving about how good Galco is, you might consider this

Are Galco Holsters for 1911's Designed to be Carried "Cocked and Locked", "Condition 1"?

All Galco holsters with safety straps and thumbreaks are designed to carry the 1911 with the "hammer down, chamber empty". Galco 1911 fit holsters that are "open top" (no safety strap and no thumbreak)are designed to accommodate 1911's in all safe "conditions" specified by the firearm manufacture.

So, it looks like they are more worried about perceived liability than whether their holsters accommodate current practice.

I kept a Safariland "duty holster", as it was specifically designed with a thumb-break for Condition 1. I discarded a shoulder holster similar to the Galco because, like the Galco, it could not be secured unless the hammer was down.

Vertical shoulder holsters, such as the Bianchi X15, don't have a thumb-break and can be carried in either Condition 1 or Condition 3.

I think El Paso Saddlery makes a shoulder harness that permits Condition 1 carry. I'm asking them about this at this time and may purchase one if their answer is "Condition 1 friendly".

Might wanna check out Mernickle holsters, too. They have some amazing shoulder rigs; hope to get one myself in the future.

Sawbones is a member on the 1911 Forum - I can't recall if
he's round THR or not but here's his Review of quite a few Shoulder
Rigs.

I like the Lew Alessi Field Master - it's on my
I want list for an N-frame S&W - I found it's also
offered for the 1911. It carries the gun muzzle down
and grip forward.

It is actually a really simple thing to convert a "hammer down" strap to condition one carry with the help of your local shoe repair guy. He can move the snap for about 10 bucks.

I have a Galco Miami Classic, which is a very good holster, but I seldom wear it because I find it less comfortable than OWB and the fact that I almost never wear a coat anymore.

The Galco Executive dairycreek mentioned is not made for the 1911 or P99...small guns only.

I have found the Jackass rig to be MUCH more concealable than the Miami classic. The gun is much more "upside down" than the Miami rig. This lends itself to much better concealability, unless you are a very big dude. I'm 5'11" and 195, and I can hide a HiPower pretty well in one with a tailored suit.

I have Alessi's "Bodyguard" for 1911 and P-35 pistols.
I've owned most of the makers, Alessi is the most comfortable IMO.
Be prepared for a substantial wait, unless you can find a retailer that has one in stock.
I ordered a "Bodyguard" for a 1911 (to replace one given to son-in-law), and waited 22 mos. to receive it.
