Any thoughts on good holsters/clothing combinations to conceal a service sized pistol, like a S&W 5906? Can it be done, or is this size pistol meant for the range or nightstand only, and not CCW?

it can be done, but very uncomfortable imo.you would also have to be very selective with the clothes you wear

My friend can conceal his stainless Sig 220 .45 w/ rail using his Galco COP beltslide rig, a pair of belt-looped shorts, a t-shirt/wifebeater and an opaque flat-bottom short-sleeve button-up shirt over the top. The pistol is a 38.55 oz unloaded monster and disappears with the above. You don't die of heat exhaustion in any kind of weather besides the insane kind you'd be miserable in anyway and it all rides comfy as can be according to him.

Any quality IWB holster with a decent belt will typically comfortably conceal a full size, even steel frame, handgun in trousers properly sized. You will need some sort of cover garment, an untucked slightly large t-shirt is the minimum it really takes.

Lots of us been doing it for years.

Double-stack 1911 in a Sparks holster under a hawaiian/camp shirt each and every day. Choose your holster and belt carefully. A bad holster will leave your side ground up, and a bad belt will put your gun on the floor.

fullsize 1911

I carry a 5" 1911 in a Galco OWB on a Ross belt. Polo shirts, T-shirts one size too big, sport coats or an untucked flannel shirt keep me covered all year long and for all occassions.

I can do it with a Sparks Summer Special, quite a comfy holster, under a T, but it prints a bit when I bend over or something. So, I prefer to put on a loose vest over that to eliminate any possible printing. I don't mess with it in summer or when I'm working, just pocket carry a 9 or a .38. But, it can be done when it's cool enough to wear the vest. In my experience, 85 degrees or cooler I can do that comfortably. 100 degree days, forget it! A very loose Hawaiian style shirt probably would work with a long tail, one size oversize. I ain't got any Hawaiian shirts, but that's a thought. It's somewhat tropical down here by the bay what with all the palm trees about. Wouldn't look too out of place. :D But, still, the weight of the gun, the IWB, it's not nearly as easy on the carrier as pocket carry or even a lighter gun IWB. With my little 9mm or my .38, last choice my .380, I need not ever be unarmed. If all I had was a big gun and a Sparks to carry it in, I'd be unarmed a LOT.

I've never tried smart carry, looks a little hard on the family jewels, though, if you wanted to bend over or sit down or something. Might be a little slower on the draw, especially sitting down.

Mine

Sig 220, Galco on the belt slide holster and a XXL sports jersey, works for my 1911 and CZ 40

5" lightweight 1911 in a Milt Sparks VM2 with 1 1/4" belts. Cover garment is a Hawaiian shirt over a T-shirt (usually Fruit of the Loom). Comfortable to wear (well, as comfy as anything can be when it's 100 degrees and the humidity is insane), and I could even hide something bigger if need be.

In the winter, I could probably stash a 4" S&W 500 under a good sweater. I don't think I will try that though.

IWB is really my only method. A good belt makes all the difference, and leather really is that much better. I wear my shirts big, but that's more personal style than for carry.

A Desert Eagle 50 AE can be concealed on a 250 lbs Maine lumberjack in January but not on a 140 lbs Miami office worker in July. It all depends on how a person is built and the location the live in on how possible it is to conceal a weapon.
