SO, a friend of mine (certainly not me) has been snacking a lot and not going to the gym, and has become horizontally enhanced, especially above the waist. I... I mean, my friend doesn't believe he wants to add any more to his width with a waistband holster.

What are some options for my longitudinally blessed friend?

+1 on the treadmill

I am a bit horizontal these days and finally decided that my SD gun is only a part of SD. I need to be in better fitness. I don't think I'll ever be muscled out or into long distance running - but I do want to be able to move when moving is called for and sometimes the best option in a SD situation requires some running and other physical movement besides drawing and firing.

anyway - I am preaching to myself at the moment

Since everyone has a different shaped carcus I think specific advise is not possible.

Behind the hip if he can reach it OWB may be an option.

The pocket carry suggested before may be a good one too.

I like the 640 Smith and Wesson.

Good luck on the quest.

Shoulder rig, the shirt will "tent out" anyway to help cover. :) OK, well it sounded good. :D
I am a bit wider than originally designed myself, and my CCW rides well in both IWB and OWB rigs, have him try some good holsters, not a WalMart cheapie.

I have a moderate beer gut and find that carry in the small of the back is pretty comfortable.

I also have treadmill with a sadistic sense of humor.

Inside-the-belt carry (ITB) using an IWB holster works for me. The holster is worn between the belt and pants, with its clip on the belt. This carry technique requires the same concealment methods as does open-carry (if concealment is desired.) The belt smooths out the gun's profile.
I'm "enhanced" as well, though not by as much as some. I don't know how, uh, expansive your, uh, friend is...

I saw on TV where a really big man snuck a small 9mm into jail with him between the rolls of fat in his belly, That could be one yucky viable option if hes big enough.

Being a loser myself...

having just hit 40# gone from me, and planning on about 15 more, I can say with confidence that 2000 calories/day, and an hour on a stair-stepper/day, will, in perhaps a couple of months, give your friend a surprising number of previously unavailable options.

I'm wearing jeans now that I haven't been able to fit into for years. Gone from XL to L in t-shirts. It's taking some getting used to, but I'm doing that with a big grin.

I have no suggestions for him if he wants to stay fat (let's quit with the euphemisms) except to be sure that his will is up to date. If that seems a little cold, so be it.

Your "friend," RKBA Bob, oughta consider losing his extra baggage. If I can do it anyone can. He should join a gym, hire a trainer, quit BS'ing himself, and start with the aches and pains.

Prevents strokes, diabetes, heart attacks, probably cancer, makes it possible to use IWB holsters, not to mention being able to out-drag deer outa the woods compared to someone 20 years younger. It's a hassle and a struggle and no one can do it for you (though they can--and do--offer encouragement, and compliments) but let me tell you it is WELL WORTH THE EFFORT!!!

Good luck.

I'm one of those men of large belly.

IWB will work if the grip is AT BELT LEVEL or below. If it's higher, it will print like mad due to the pistol being canted outward. This will also wreck your pistol belts.

OWB will work if it's low enough, but this is not concealed.

Pocket, ankle or shoulder carry (with overshirt) are possibilities. Ankle is inconvenient for me (5-8 285lbs), and may be for your friend. Shoulder carry is not an option for me since it's hard to find overshirts that fit my dimensions, thus may not cover.

This left me with pocket carry. This is a compromise in firepower, but with good ammo and firearm selection you can get as much punch as possible for the situation at hand.
