A friend of mine recently purchased a American Tactical Imports 92F clone, as he wanted to get a 9mm to replace his .45 as his carry gun.
I'm in the market for a compact pistol, this would be my first semi-auto, and my purpose would be for concealed carry.
He has a Taurus MILLENNIUM PRO 145 .45 in stainless.
He bought it used, fires great, shot it a few times when we've gone out shooting in the past.
I like the gun, not a big fan of it's moderate range accuracy, but I'm told that short barrel pistols, especially .45, are just that way.
Anyways, to the point, I asked him what he would part with it for, and he's offering the gun, with the case and original documents etc., two magazines, an in-the-waistband holster, an outside holster with a magazine pouch attached, a box of 100 of the Winchester white box .45 ammo, and two other boxes of ammo, equaling around 200 rounds; all for $350.
Sounds like a deal, yeah?
I've just been hearing a lot of talk like "Taurus is an alright gun for the money, but if you plan on shooting it a lot, it probably won't last long", now I know that Taurus has a lifetime warranty for the gun, not the owner, but what I'm worried about is quality when I need it. I need this gun to function if it needs to be used.
What is your opinion on the situation? Any Taurus semi-auto owners?

I for one, feel that Taurus has a bad rap. No, I don't own one, but have several family members who do. I used them all, talked to them and my consensus is, all in all, they ok. I suspect there was a problem in the past with quality control.

Would I buy one? maybe so, depends on if it is what I want and in my price range.

I bought a non-stainless PT145 off a co-worker which he'd run 13 rounds through. I come with 24 Cor-bon HP, And 88 WWB's for 275.

The way I figured it was I'd buy the 45 just to say I had one, I've put 300 rounds thru mine so far, and the only problem is it's not that hot on shooting HP's it likes to feed them straight into the feed ramp (PDX & Corbons). It's never failed on FMJ's of any type FWIW. I'm going to keep it I suppose, and I carry it with one HP chambered and a mag full of FMJs.

I'm now in the market for a G23 or FNX40 I can't decide which for my next CC piece.

Taurus A OK....

It is not only my opinion, but I have a track record with Taurus Firearms.....I have Never needed the warranty! And have never been disappointed with any Taurus purchase.

I have and had a lot of them!

I have had a millenium 9 and .380....have not had a 145 though, I will say that the milliniums are not my cup of tea...but neither are crocks! oops I meant glocks...LOL...I just like steel guns the polymer stuff does not shine for me.

I do hope to buy a 1911 soon! These are getting awesome reports from honest people on out of the box accuracy.

The 9 millinium my little brother has and the .380 sold....My PT58 was more accurate than it was.

I have put a thousand or more rounds through a few PT92's with no problems!

I have owned (or still own) a total of 9 Of them.(92/99's)

I still own 92's and 99's....Love them

And I also own Berettas....Love them too.

I have a PT58HC (new version) with well near 500 rounds through it! And this is the most accurate auto I have had from Taurus.

I had older PT58 (old version) and lord only knows how many rounds went through it.

Taurus is an import....IMO it got its bad rap from early history...they made SW type revolvers (had them too) no problems...they were fair priced for the working man and then they bought beretta equipment and changed safety and started producing affordable berettas for the working man...this ticked off the man that just paid $700 for a 9mm that looked and shot like a beretta.

Some even say the safety change actually improved the beretta design, I like em both! I will prob catch H@%! from a few people but I know Taurus is a good dependable firearm..just a fact! My last three purchase were 2 Taurus and 1 Beretta. I am still thrilled with all three purchases.

The deal sounds like a good one with all the stuff and ammo.....hands down I dont think you could go wrong....if you didnt like it you could get your money back and maybe then some or trade it for a 92/99

Good Luck
(putting on my flack jacket now....let it fly at me!) But fact is through 20 years I have had no problems with them. The Fit and finish have improved over the years, but they have always functioned well for me, revolver ,auto or rifle.

My wife had an all black Millennium Pro in .45 as well. Really, really great gun. nothing else to be said. The one series from Taurus that I have seen substantiated information about it being bad is the Millennium series ... the Pro seems to have ironed out those kinks.

Other than that, yes ... Taurus is largely a victim of its name.

I carry a stainless that I have had for years. I have several thousand rounds through it and nary a problem.

I can buy a new PT145 for $350 new locally.
Imo ammo is worth 1/2 its original cost in an after-market trade/sale.
Taurus also has horrible resale value, He would get $175 if he traded it in.
Its a $225 gun imo used and $35 for the ammo and the holsters are worth nothing imo.
Id offer $260 or go buy a new gun yourself.

If hes a smart man he will take it as its a fair price and more than he will get any other way he sells it.
I like Taurus myself and that gun has a great track record as long as its the SA/DA generation.

all for $350

IMO it's too high priced. You can get them new for that.
Twist his arm and get him to come down in price a bit. He
knows that the local gun store won't give him anything near
that.

Thanks for all the great replies, guys.

Retail on them is just beneath $500, isn't it?

I seriously doubt I'd be able to afford a new one for $350 around here, in fact, I'd be lucky to get anything new that isn't a .380 for less than $400.00.

I don't know where you are located, but around here the gun is closer to $399, new. The extras bring the value up of course, but not too much.
If you like the gun, offer him $250-300 for it and let him think about it. You'll be getting a good deal.
He may well have tried to sell this at a gun shop and been offered pocket change for it. He's just looking for a fair deal.

I'm in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
Not as far as I know. He's been saying he wants to get a 9mm so his girlfriend feels more comfortable shooting and I offered to buy it off him. He said he'd let it go for $350, which is a far better deal than any of the shops around here are offering.

also, thanks for the links weregunner :)

I got mine for $339 brand new from a dealer here in Washington State. At the WAC Gun Show...

I love the feel and look of it. It feeds FMJs all day long. Won't chamber HP without a firm "wack" on the bottom of the magazine.

There is a lot of info about the defects of this particular pistol and it's magazines on taurusarmed.net. Seems the mags are bad from the factory, and there are three different versions of mags for it. Taurus only lists one part number and won't acknowledge the issue...

Thanks Weregunner .....Like the link to Taurus.net!

When looking at value of a Gun I never look at a trade value! Obviously you would lose if you tried to trade something at a gun shop!

I look at a resale value....someone looking for what you have! I concur you could get your money back!
The gun shop would never be fair on trade value due to they want and need profit, and the extras they would devalue to you, them resale and make money on them too.

To individual they have value, because obviously they will probably need it!

My brothers friend of a friends sisters cousin on his fathers side said his uncle liked Taurus!!! Love this high road thread!!

I love my PT145. No issues. Bought it new and has been flawless. It's not a top end 1911 but it carries well, functions well and shoots the .45ACP well. To me, it is a good gun.

As for ammo going for half price because it is "used", huh? I didn't realize ammo lost value because someone handled it. It's worth pretty much you'd have to pay for it at a Wally World type place. Trying to rip off your buddy isn't a nice thing to do. Some guys get all excited in seeng how much they can fleece someone else and decent people are fair and both the seller and buyer want a fair deal. A used pistol is worth more if you know who used it and if he did any mods to it or not. It also helps if you knew how he took care of it. Anyone buying one of my guns would get a LNIB gun even if it had 2000 rounds thru it but that's just me.

A nice, used PT145 is worth $250. 200 rounds of .45ACP ammo is certainly worth $30 per hundred. If you would use the holsters then they have value and if you would not use them they have no value to you. If you don't have to pay sales tax and/or a transfer fee then that also saves you money.

If your friend will take $350 and you would pay $350 neither is getting ripped off or taken advantage of. It sounds like a deal where both parties are happy. That's the best deal there is. Trying to chisel $20 out of a buddy "just because" means you aren't that good of a buddy, IMO. Any friend who tries to beat me out of $20 "just because" isn't a buddy for long. It means he's only out for himself and "to heck with everybody else".

I think the logic behind the ammo losing value is because it's not store bought. If there's an issue, you can't just take it back to the store. Just as if you were to buy a brand new TV, in box, you're not going to get the same price as the store is asking.
It's unmodded and I know he takes very good care of it. He bought it used, but like I said, I've shot a few mags through it, never had an issue. He says that the only time he ever has an issue with it misfeeding is when he uses the Winchester white box ammo. He said it's not frequent, but it will happen with that type of ammo.

I would definitely use the holsters, no sales tax or transfer fee :)

I asked him what he thought was fair, he said $350.00 for the whole lot, I feel it's fair. I see that I can buy a new one from Budsgunshop for ~$340, but it would cost me more money for holsters and ammo.
The idea right now is more bang for my buck. I need a carry gun, and would like a .45. I know where the gun is coming from, and how it was taken care of. I've been able to try before I buy, and I'm helping a friend and getting what I need. I think it's a win-win situation.
I appreciate all of your input guys and there's definitely a lot that I've considerated since reading your replies. Again, much appreciated :)
