Carry Pants/shorts?

Hi all im 25 220lbs and im looking for some clothes to conceal a LCR or SP-101 or G27 i dont like baggy clothes though and they'll have to be tough im a machinist and baggy cheap clothes are a no no for me i currently wear Dickies canvas pants because there tough but kinda have small pockets a IWB is nice but i got a "love" handle thatd have to be worked on before all day carry with a IWB any help would be nice thanks

Can you conceal the LCR in your back pocket? Or the SP101 depending on the barrel length? You are the same weight as me, although several years younger. I too have the love handle issue. I find J-frames, the LCP, the Sig P238, and the SP101 (depending on grips and barrel length) fit just fine in my back pocket in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster.

As usual, good advice given already. You my friend have already figured out the key to carrying concealed is not as much the gun, but the shirt and holster. I also have the LCP and Glock, and my holsters are a combination of the Don Hume leather IWB and their J.I.T. slide holster. I also have a Blackhawk pocket holster for my LCP that works very well. You may pay $50+ for the 5-11 line, or you may purchase the shear nylon fishing shirts from Sam's Club/Walmart for $15.;)

I know plenty of guys with love handles that carry IWB all day long. Just get a good holster, like a CrossBreed SuperTuck, and buy your pants/shorts 1-2" larger in the waist.

I have my G27 on right now. My wife, who knows I always carry, cannot tell I have it on without asking her to look for it sometimes. She always has my back and will tell me if I am grossly printing, she always gives me the once over before leaving anywhere. Practice makes perfect, and now she sometimes asks if I forgot to bring it!

Your holster and belt should be sorted out first. If you got that, you are good to go. I use a Milt Sparks VMII and double thick gun belt for my G27 and G29 (you'd like the belt being a machinist --it'll last you a lifetime). The holster does more than hold the gun and the belt more than hold up your pants. If you get a VMII for the G27, ask them to cut the holster so the pistol sets a little lower in the pants.

I say this because I am in a similar boat as you. I am 6' and weight about the same, I put on some weight after the army too so concealing something on the hip can be difficult. I can also hide both these pistols wearing pretty much anything I want. Also, I recently lost some weight, from 240 down to about 225 or so... It made concealment so much easier (not to mention I feel better).

I agree with the 5.11 pants as mentioned above, but that is just because I think they make comfortable useful pants. They come in cotton, but I like the nylon ones better. They are kind of like BDU's but more comfortable and less army looking. Although they do look tactical, and anyone else carrying will instantly recognize you as armed. I got the look the other day when I saw another fellow wearing the same pants as I... I could tell he could tell we both knew each other was carrying. They make shorts too, and cargo pants that aren't as tactical looking. Reasonably priced compared to Carhart (sp) and Levis. Not a big fan of the 5.11 shirts though. I like the Underarmor and the Tommy Bahama for summer, I wear fleece in the winter (so in the winter I can easily hide a G20 or whatever I want...)

On the other hand, with the rig I use, I can hide those two pistols just fine using denim shorts or cargo shorts, and an underarmor polo shirt. I print a little when I bend over, but not enough for me to worry about (it isn't a problem here). I'm not an undercover narc, so I don't need to dupe people into thinking I'm not armed. Conversely, I'd rather them have a little apprehension. Stay away. But I don't like to advertise either.

But the absolute best thing you can wear to hide a pistol is a Hawaiian print. I like the Tommy Bahama, they are a heavy silk and the patterns look nice, and I got a bunch when my wife worked there. Anyway, the pattern breaks up any printing. So if that is a problem, wear an underarmor t shirt tucked into the shorts, and then wear the print unbuttoned over that. Problem solved. Only issue is if you wear the pistol near the front of the hip, it will show when the wind blows. Again, this isn't an issue for me, but may be for you depending on your local laws. However, you won't be wearing this working on the lathe.

For your LCR, I have a S&W340PD. I just carry this thing in my pocket, no holster, but nothing else in the pocket either. It hides just fine, and sometimes I honestly forget it is there. Come to think of it, I actually went to the hardware store for some last minute items a few weeks ago... I was working around the house and still had my G27 on when I went. It wears pretty comfortable too, so much so that I was halfway into the store when I realized I was open carrying! Again, that isn't a problem for me, but still I'd like to have the awareness of it on my hip... I guess. It being that comfortable sure makes carry all day a breeze. I never leave without it.

Yeah, focus on the holster and the belt, get a couple of Hawaiian prints for when you are out, and with a little practice, you'll be able to hide the G27 in your Dickies. BTW, Milt Sparks sells tuckable clips for the VMII. I have them, got them back when they came free, but I never use them. They do work pretty well though.

If I were you, I'd consider the advice I've given on hiding in public using your regular clothes and a good rig with a proper, tight gun belt. For work, if absolute concealment is a must, then I'd say go with pocket revolver. It served me well in cases like that.

Hiding is an art. Most of us went through $1000 worth of holsters trying to find the right one to fit a $500 pistol just right. Some were lucky and did homework and found a better one sooner. Everyone will be different, but for me, the Milt Sparks has worked out so well with my body type and carry habits, that I have two identical holsters for both the 27 and 29, and I plan on getting another one very similar (they make an new one that rides lower, but basically the same thing) for a Glock 20 I plan on carrying in the winter and in the woods.

I remember thinking it was impossible awhile back though. Trying to use some of the Galco stuff and that Uncle Mikes junk. My best advice though has got to be to find a GREAT leather maker and get a double thick GUN belt (not a dept. store belt!).

Take care of that, adjust your clothing options some, and you'll be good to go. Oh yeah, getting your pants a size or two over is a good idea like the fellow said. All good advice on here.

Also, call up Milt Sparks. Mitch Rosen. Those guys should help you out, and they will give you good advice and not just try to sell you something (in fact, if you insist on something not in their ethos, they will send you elsewhere).

Good luck!

Pants with Cargo pockets and a decent pocket holster might be a better choice.
There are plenty of very good work grade pants out there with cargo pockets.
Comfortable too.

Something I do that has worked for me. When over seas you see many people which have a smallish bag that has a strap that goes over your shoulder and the bag hangs someplace around your waist. When walking the bag can be swung around behind you or anyplace between your 6 and 12 position. Some of these bags have several zippered or velcro pockets with plenty of room for mags, box of ammo and the weapon of you choice. When sitting the bag can be moved to your 12 or removed totally and placed before you on a table or by your side or on the floor. I have stopped using a holster and only use the bags now....works for me. If someone had me at gun point, demanding my wallet it is simple to reach in the bag and shoot through the material as needed.

What is so special about the 511's? What makes the firearm concealable?

I am 5'8", ~215, pretty muscular as i've been told.

My problem is that my buttocks and thighs are huge compared to my waist. I cannot carry my phone and car keys without discomfort in my Levi 569's (the only jean, I have found so far, that fits comfortably).

I am just hoping that someone says that the 511's will accommodate my dimensions+an IWB holster.

I have seriously considered giving up on IWB until I have read this thread.

I hide my SP under most any untucked shirt easily with this 23 buck holster....I also often pocket carry a Colt Agent or Cobra in the pants I'm wearing in that pic. They are 15 buck Wrangler cargos from Walmart.

If you have pants/shorts that fit loosely, another option is the Smart Carry. I have one and do not use it often, but it has it's place. It is a unique concept that takes some getting used to, but is fairly versatile if your pants fit the profile, and it frees you from the whole "belt" thing.

Just something to think about.

WOW! What great responses that why i like this forum very knowledgeable people here! I kinda like the 5.11 EMS pants lot of little pockets for things like flashlights, scales (ruler), and all sorts of goodies. Right now i wear the Dickies canvas pants because their a workhorse they are by far the best heavy weight pant i have found. Im a faster draw from the front pocket than the IWB Id actually would like to get a holster for cross draw that would feel comfortable because i use to cowboy shoot cross draw. My belt right now is a 1 1\2 wide 1\4 thick leather belly strap for a saddle i got at a local tack store the guy laughed his arse off when i asked for chicago bolts and a buckle:D my belt is a weapon in itself. A co-worker lent me his Desanti pocket holster for his LCR so im gona try that and see if it breaks up the pattern of the gun in my pants. Honestly im new to carrying a gun ive always had one in the truck and im a avid shooter 2-3 times a week but now that ive started a family of my own i have two little ladies now that mean the world to me. My wife carries her LCR in the diaper bag since thats her "purse" now. Mich rosen's UPL-EXP will be my next purchase for my glock 27 and i will get a few 5.11 shorts and shirts for down time bbq's and recreation. How do you all feel about shoulder rigs? ive been considering a Galco classic Miami for my Glock 22 then i could carry a fullsize with a better sight radius than say a LCR and Galco makes excellent cowboy rigs but Does any one use a shoulder holster?

i modified some pants by cutting the bottom out of the pocket and extending it by an inch or so with some denim material from a local fabric store.

if printing is an issue, you can also sew in an extra layer or two of fabric to the front inside of the pocket, to thicken it up and make printing less of an issue. the cost for this is almost free if you have some old jeans and a sewing machine laying around. just cut and move fabric to other pants- and one pair of jeans is enough fabric to do several pairs of your work pants i'd guess.

@ B33: The 5.11 shorts have 4 huge pockets in the standard positions (2x front, 2x rear) + several other small pockets for phone, mags, etc. IWB sucks if your pants are too tight - you have to buy them a size too big and wear a good stiff gun belt to secure them. If you use a floppy belt you'll keep cinching it tighter until it hurts and it still won't work.

After a year of trying to "make stuff work" IWB with various holsters and dress belts I a bought a 1.5" reinforced belt - It made a difference even with the cheap holsters.

The cotton 5.11 pants/shorts are a good choice and very strong. They do share one characteristic I remember in the old Royal Robbins Billy Goat pants/shorts from way back--they tend to shrink, especially in length.

Another choice might be Tru-Spec. I like the poly/cotton pants and shorts and wear them most of the time. They are not as heavy duty as the cotton material but they don't shrink either. I've never tried the all-cotton Tru-Specs but they may be worth a look.

Another possibility is the Wrangler cargo pants/shorts from Walmart. Some of them are pretty heavy duty cotton and they're economical. I have a couple of pairs of the shorts that I like to wear when I'm working in the yard and garden.

I have a LCR and a nylon IWB holster that I put in my front pocket.

Rides well doesn't print; the belt clip keeps it from moving around.

Bumping this thread rather than creating a new one.

511 Tactical is a vendor I can use for my company clothing allowance. I've been eyeballing their pants and polos for sometime, but haven't pulled the trigger, prefering to stick with my Carhartt's. Well, it's coming to that time again, and again I'm eyeballing the 511.

My company, sadly, does not allow weapons in the facility. But since I don't differentiate between work clothes and casuals, these would be worn outside of work as well, where I can carry. Currently I am without a CPL, but we have open carry, which I frequently do. I like the Carhartt's for OWB carry, but looking for something with more carry options, ergo, the need for a wardrobe change up.

How do the 511's stand up to Carhartt's over long term durability?

I wear Dickies-brand twill cargo pants with a shirt and tie at work (Detective with a Sheriff's Office) every day. Granted I don't usually UWB at work. They look decent and are durable.

I'd suggest staying away from the tactical "shoot me first" pants. Nothing other than a 5.11 vest screams "GUN!" as much.

Seems like I've seen a number of jean companies that make carpenters pants that should be suitable. Cut the hammer loop off and it should be pretty hard to get tangled up unless you're leaning on the lead screw.
