The title says all.

I think I may have found a special Mosin M44.

The year is dated 1943, to be honest I really should have paid more attention to the arsenal mark but Im like 99 percent sure it was a Star with the arrow indicating the Tula arsenal. Im also pretty sure this has been rearsenaled, honestly I didn't ask. The gun is in fantastic shape, what would I need to be looking for to see if it is a rearsenal? Any specific marks that would indicate this? Everything matches on the gun, the serial # was 1192, this much I do remember. The color of the varnish was a reddish hue, much like some of the true Russian Sks's, most Mosins to me have a more Walnut or not so Reddish tint to them. This Mosin Im looking at seemed just over all better built.

From what Im reading on several of the Mosin sites Im aware of the m44 should have been a 1944 production gun and so would 1943 with such a low serial # be something special like a pre production test run or something? The asking price is 99 bucks and honestly I should have just assumed it was something unique and jumped on it. I have to wait until Tues because the gentlemans shop is closed sun and mon and wont open till tues at noon. I just need to know if it it is worth being on his doorstep at noon tues. Im just hoping no one else picked that sucker up after I left there on Fri. All day Sat it could have been sold too. He had another M44 dated 1945 but over all it just seemed sloppier.

Please someone confirm my suspicion on the 1943, even if I am wrong and it wasn't a Tula, it should still be worth the investment right? But a Tula made m44 is much harder to come by right? Especially if it was a pre production run gun?

im hoping i didnt screw up by passing on this one already, so hoping its still there tues when he opens up again

I am not one of those mosin-nagant fanatics who can point at a little squiggly line stamped in the receiver and tell you the name, address, and four-generation ancestry of the Finnish guy who inspected the rifle in 1943. I can tell you in general there are very few mosin-nagants that turn out to be worth mega-bucks, but, if you found a nice one for $99 that you like, go ahead and grab it.

im not hoping for one that is worth tons of money, but if it happens to be a bit unique, it would be nice to have something a bit different

Are you sure it is an M44? I just got my C&R and am in the process of learning about these neat old Mosin Nagant rifles. In fact I just bought two, a 91/30 and a M38 which just happen to both be marked 1943. A couple places that have helped me in my research are: www.russian-mosin-nagant.com and 7.62x54.net. Lots of good information can also be found at www.surplusrifle.com. Jim.

According to my copy of The Mosin-Nagant Rifle by Terence W. Lapin, there were about 50,000 M1944 carbines made for trials in 1943 and an unspecified number were used in battlefield tests in November of '43.
The M-44 was officially approved in January of '44. He goes on to describe a Tula 1943 M-44 as "quite uncommon" (Pg. 94).

If the rifle has been re-arsenaled, it should have either a "box with a diagonal line thru it" to indicate stock work and/or a "box with a vertical line down the center" to indicate refinished metal parts (Pg. 198).

IMHO it's a neat historic item and you aren't being asked to pay extra for the history, so if you are wanting the rifle because it's a nice rifle, and uncommon as well, then go ahead. :)

it is according to the importers markings

it is, it has the fixed bayo on the barrel and the appropiate stock to accomodate it

also according to the importers markings it says russian m44, and then the company of the importer

its clearly labeled 1943, grrr im just going to have to buy the damned thing tomorrow and I must get ahold of a digicam so I can share pics of this thing :) It is going to kill me until tommrow to go back and see if its there, I so hope so, Im also beating myself for not paying closer attention to the arsenal, it will be suspense until I can go tommrow and settle this matter

I know I want too anyhow :D Thanks for all the help folks, really appreciated
Hey that book your referencing sounds good, it might be worth amazoning it or checking out borders or barnes and nobles to see if they have it

Id say pick it up...

even if it dosent turn out to be a collectors item, you still have an all matching m44 with a unique color variation to the stock. Id say that alone can be worth it!

No real downside that I can see, and maybe a nice upside in value.

Go for it!:)
