Got IDed when buying 3 boxes of .40. I am 43. Clerk said she had to varify I was a state resident and she can no longer sell to residents of other states.

I'm going to assume confused.

See update below.

Mike

PS. A lot of replies seem to be assuming that I assumed why she carded me. The clerk told me it was to varify state of residence. Some clerks at the same Walmart do not. I am 43.

Without a location no one can be sure. Live nearby any of the nany states that require a permit of sorts to buy ammo? Could be to prevent across state line sales.

Could just be confused.

I offer ID most of the time whether i'm asked or not, some stores are really strict on their employees and I don't wish any of them to loose their job simply because they forgot to ask me.

Live in Indiana but work in Illinois. Last week Wally World was still selling to us "outsiders". (Since I am an IN resident, I only have to show my DL to purchase ammo in IL, but an IL resident has to have a FOID card.)

Are you close to the California border? It could be that your Arizona Wal-Mart is trying to be a "good" California citizen and prevent California residents from crossing into Arizona to buy ammunition (or stockpile it) in anticipation or circumvention of restrictive California ammunition laws.

Some Wal-Marts might just be feeling obstructive. Check another in your town and see if they are following the same rules.

I am down in Tucson and I have never heard of that either? I a new FFL so I don't get my hands on much ammo from my distributors yet so I buy my personal ammo from WalMart and have not seen that yet? Weird!

I had the same request for ID at my local wally world in Prescott, AZ. when I bought some 44 mag ammo. I didn’t ask if it was to be sure I was over 21 or a resident. But, I’m 200+ miles from the nearest border and 71 years old. Go figure.

since you are in phoenix, I assume there are other walmarts close by. If possible maybe try another one out and see.

Some of the oddest stories come from Walmart since the banic* started. It's got to be just the sheer volume of shoppers meeting lack of training or rather lack knowledge for the typical Walmart employee/management chain. There is bound to be more misinformation exchanged with more encounters over time.

*banic - a concocted merging of words, a contraction of sorts. Combination of ban, as in banning firearms, and panic as in panic buying.

The walmarts here want to see your pistol permit if you're buying pistol ammo. If you don't have a permit, they won't sell it to you. It's been like that for 3+ years.

The only question that I'm occasionally asked at Walmart is whether the .22 ammo I'm buying is for a handgun or a rifle. No requests for my drivers license.

What exactly is a FOID card?

I was in Indiana last weekend near the Illinois border, buying some 00 buckshot, and the gal ringing me up asked if I was an Illinois resident. I thought that was a strange question, but figured it had something to do with some Illinois anti-gun complication.

The Wal-Mart's on the MA / NH line check ID's too, if you're from MA you have to show your LTC to buy ammo from them.

It's really quite bizarre ... I bought a muzzleloader there, rifle - OK, Pyrodex - OK, 209 Primers - OK, Sabotted bullets - WE NEED TO SEE YOUR ID!

Foid = firearm owners identification, in Il. you have to have this to buy any ammunition or guns. It is run by the state police and is $10 for 5 yrs

Yet another reason to not give my shooting money to Walmart. I feel bad for those for whom this is their only local option. The local Walmarts in my area of southwestern Illinois seem to go out of their way to make any firearms-related purchases as painful as possible, leading me to the conclusion that they'd rather I spend my money elsewhere. So, I do.

I've given up trying to get ammo at WW as they never seem to have any in stock anyhow.

But, when my local farm store has it in stock, I do have to show my FOID when I ask a clerk to get it out of the locked case and then again when I'm at the register.

I was asked for a FOID card once when buying ammo at Wal Mart several years ago. It was here in Utah, of all places. We don't need no stinkin' FOID card! Turns out the associate had moved out here from Illinois for school and had worked at a wally-world out there. I was his first customer buying anything firearms-related. His manager was just as confused as I was.

I've always had to show ID when buying ammo at WM in GA. Pretty sure it's just to verify you're of legal age...

Then again, I haven't bought any ammo other than 12GA bird-shot from WM in over a year, so I'm not sure of any new policies.

I live in Nashua NH and shop at a Walmart in Hudson NH, both cities are right on the border with MA. I have to show my NH DL to buy ammo. If you show a MA DL you need to show a MA FID or LTC. Most likely this is due to Walmart operating in both states, so MA can lean on them to enforce MA laws even when they don't apply.
