I'm looking for an explanation on what grips I need to be looking for on my 41 blackhawk. I want to put on some stag or bone. There are a lot out there but I'm never confident on which will fit the frame I have. I know this is a moronic inquiry but... Can someone give me an idea of how to be sure what grip frame size I have and how that size is or isn't described by sellers.

Over the years, I've bought dozens of grips for my guns that have replaceable panels and have never had a problem with fit. There is however a small caveat, it's been my experience the higher end panels always fit better.

I've always bought grips one of two ways. If it's a local shooter-to-shooter sale I try them on the gun first. For commercial and custom suppliers, if the offering's description matches precisely the gun in question, I've had no problems I can remember.

I don't buy anything from eBay, or eBay like sites, and I tend to stick with known manufacturers with a good reputation within the shooting community. The way I see it, grip panels are like shoes: you can get by with a cheap pair but sooner or later you're going to wish you'd bought better quality. As is the usual case, YMMV.

Take your grips off and read the model # molded into the grip frame.

If you have a blue New Model .41 Mag Blackhawk, you have an XRN-3RED grip frame.

I've bought grips from CLC Custom grips, for my ROA. Very nice grips.
I also bought a set of grips from Private's Custom Grips, for my .44 Spl New Model Blackhawk Flattop. Not quite as nice as my CLC grips, but still very nice grips.
Both are also far more comfortable, to me, than the factory grips.
I don't care for the current Ruger checkered, black plastic grips. They look good, but aren't comfortable for shooting, unless you wear shooting gloves.
It's amazing how such fine checkering can feel like a wood rasp halfway through a box of ammo.

I would not hesitate to buy grips from either. In fact, I need to order a set for my Blackhawk .45 Convertible.

I also have a pair of grips from Privates Custom Grips for my Ruger Flattop Blackhawk .44 Special. I went with American Holly wood with Ruger medalions because to me they look like ivory but don't have the ivory price tag. Very nice looking and fitting grips that are very affordable.

CLC Custom grips makes some extremely nice grips as well. Just about any custom grip maker can readily assist you in determining what particular Ruger grip frame you have and fit the proper grips to it.
