I often read how minies and conicals can slide off of the charge if the barrel isn't elevated.

REAL's ought to stay put, as will sabots. What else?

I'm thinking I'll eventually need a Trade Rifle barrel fitted with a PC brass scope for hunting beyond 100 yds to go in the Deerstalker stock. That or maybe a Great Plains Hunter.

I always put a thin wad down on top of the bullet (usually REAL) just to be on the safe side. May not be necessary but it doesn't hurt.

If the minie is a tight enough fit it ought to stay down on the powder with the barrel tilted down. If your minies are a little small you could just smear a heavy amount of lube on them to create a more snug fit. After one is fired there is usually enough fouling to hold the second and later minies in place. Otherwise a sizind die to bump up the minie or a larger mold will be needed for a larger diameter minie. A patche .570 ball really streaks out of a 58 rifle and is no slouch in the game killing category. I do like the minies best however.

I had asked on another forum's thread about conicals and using a tight fitting wad on top, but was told it could form an obstruction if the wad went to one side instead of flush, or that once fired, it could push it off center and cause a problem.

I dunno, but I certainly don't want to have it happen to me!

I've also considered that if/when I cast my own 240 grn Kaido bullets for my Old Army I could seat them in .458" sabots. I like a more traditional load, but I also like multipurpose stuff...

When you load those 240 gr. bullets in your ROA, you should shave a rim of lead off as it enters the chamber. That would indicate that the bullet is slightly wider in diameter than the chamber. They won't back off unless you are firing a hellacious load. If they don't shave off and instead drop into the chamber cleanly, they are slightly undersize and should be re-sized .. or TRY to get your money back for the mold and buy one that is at least .454.

I've not noticed a ring of lead shaved from the conicals. Kaido told me they are .456" at it's widest. But they only seat easily up to about 1/8 of an inch.

I have had them come out of the chamber a bit before when using 35 grns of 3F Triple 7. The recoil is substantial. I like it! It feels like a 44 Mag.

I have no complaints with his conicals except for the price. At $40/100 plus shipping they are pricey! I'm hoping to get into casting my own one of these days as I really want a RNFP bullet for my Old Army. He sells the 6 cavity mold for $85 IIRC. Not too bad.
