Given Smith & Wesson's expansion into long guns and the success of the M&P line of pistols and rifles, when do you think we'll see an M&P 12? If we do see it, will it be pump or semi? Who will make it? Would you buy it?

I'd love to see a nice combat pump or semiauto shotgun from S&W. I'm guessing they'd just put their name on someone elses, like they did with their AR-15 (Originally a Stag IIRC)

I think an 870 with a knoxx stock, an integral upper rail, and mounts for a light would make a great M&P 12. Assuming the quality was what i'd expect from the rest of the M&P line, i'd consider it if the price was right.

Given S&W's track record with shotguns, they might be a little gun-shy about trying it again.

They may very well do that. They have done alot of "branding" of other designs in the past and especially recently.

There is alot of consolidation going on in the firearms world and anything is possible. I can almost certainly say though that it won't be Remington's guns as they are part of the same capital group as Bushmaster-no way they allow a competitor to brand their guns. Maybe Mossberg....aren't alot of other choices that are truly competitive in the market.

Sticking alot of money into an alternative design is far too risky these days, especially since they can sell most everything they produce now anyway, not as much incentive to innovate. Only thing I could see them doing is maybe some kind of joint venture with Benelli....whose only real product are their shotguns...that makes some sense to me.

Lawyerman makes a good point with Mossberg. It'd be interesting if S&W sold a "super-premium" Mossberg. Basically, a top-of-the-line Mossberg with all the tactical goodies already on it. Remington has an auto in the Spartan line... maybe S&W can talk to their connection in Turkey and get a fancy one done.

S&Ws 10-K indicates that they have plenty of backorder for all of their product lines. I doubt anything they do would be developed in-house, so it would most likely be a badge job.

They may, but it will be very secondary to the pistol and rifle lines. Police Shotgun is not a growth market. While the patrol shotgun is not extinct by any means, LE agencies either already have shotguns (and they don't wear out very fast) or they're in the market for rifles.

S&W may well do it just to ensure their status as a one-stop-shop for small departments.
