Hey, if you got rid of the gun permits, the process would be even more streamlined!

Gun permits only available at 2 locations

January 04, 2003

NEW BRITAIN -- State police have announced gun permits and permit renewals may only be made in person at two locations state-wide in 2003.

"Three of our previous locations for processing permits will be closed to help streamline efficiency and to save costs," said Sgt. J. Paul Vance, state police spokesman.

As of Jan. 1, the Department of Public Safety Headquarters, 1111 Country Club Road, Middletown, and State Police Barracks, 149 Prospect St., Bridgeport, will be the only state facilities accepting applicants for gun permits and permit renewals.

Vance said previous locations in Tolland, Montville and Litchfield will no longer be processing permits, but the state will continue to enforce the same requirements for obtaining a permit to catty a firearm.

"We had five locations and now we have two, Middletown is located centrally in the state and Bridgeport will accommodate Fairfield county," said Vance. "We will continue to process the same volume of applicants, who will be held to the same rigorous standards."

Vance said currently the state requires applicants to obtain a temporary state permit from resident’s local police departments before applying with the state.

The state requires permit applicants to attend certified gun safety classes, present positive identification and proof of state residency and submit to fingerprinting and criminal background checks.

Detective Harold Gannon, spokesman for the New Britain Police Department, said local jurisdictions may require additional information, beyond state guidelines, for permit applicants.

Gannon said New Britain asks applicants to present three letters of character reference to obtain a temporary permit. He said individuals who have been previously convicted of a felony or on third-degree assault and possession of marijuana charges are not eligible to obtain a permit.

After receiving a temporary permit, applicants have 60 days to apply for a state permit before purchasing a firearm. Once a state permit has been obtained, Gannon said individuals can buy a handgun or pistol.

"We will continue to ensure the safety of state residents by investigating all individuals permitted to carry a firearm," said Vance.

Connecticut issues carry licenses by mail to non-residents. I got mine in about 60 days after submitting my application. You must possess a license from another state (but does not have to be your home state), before they will issue a license. You also have to have proof of firearms training.

Connecticut's application forms are somewhat confusing to fill out, and don't reflect the fact that Connecticut actually issues licenses to non-residents.

See www.packing.org for more information.

Here in CT, I get cranky if I have to drive more than 10 minutes to get take out from a chinese restaurant!! Luckily, the Bridgeport barracks is the closest to me anyways. A pretty big inconvenience for most of the state, though. Probably an hour drive from the farthest parts of the state to Middletown.

Oh, then it's SMALLER than Houston in drivetime!:D

Figures

Notice they left the Bridgeport office open to service Fairfield County. Heaven forbid the wealthy should have to deal with the unwashed masses.
They keep upping the renewal charge as well. Less service for more money. Typical.
Take Care

Hello, I live in Conn. Middletown is maybe 2 1/2 hours fom the farthest point in the state. We are suffering budget problems now and reducing services is how they gov is trying to save money. I read that fish and game depts are getting hammered also.
I have to say that getting a CCW is fairly easy here. It depends on your town police as you get a town permit first. After that you go to Middletown and get a state permit. Some places sit on your permit application for as long as they can, 8 weeks I think, but in my town they just processed it as soon as the fingerprint checks were done. Some places you have to go to an interview with the police but state law says they have to have a reason to deny you. We have to take a class mine was 8 hours. The new big game class is over 2 days!
It isn't gun friendly here. The suburbs are growing and taking away all the wild areas and farms. People will move into a smalll town and then try to change it.
An aside anybody know of any good places to shoot around Hartford? Now I go to wallingford to shoot

Does anyone else find it extremely ironic that the worst states in respect to 2nd amendment rights are in New England, the starting place of the American Revolution? What the hell happened?

If you mean New England strictly as the states east of New York state, only two of those states are may-issue. The others are shall-issue (though CT has some very onerous assault weapon laws that need to be challenged under that state's RKBA provisions).

Though, MA being anti-gun makes almost no sense. I think the Kennedy liberals had something to do with it. :cuss:

Muzzleblast,
Want more Connecticut irony? How about home of Colt, Winchester, Mossburg, Marlin, Charter Arms, Ruger Corporate Offices, and probably a bunch of other firearms and related products/sub-contractors that
I'm not aware of!
Welcome to New England!

No ironic is that the state pension money is invested in Colt but then they try to pass assault weapons bans and sue gunmakers!

Not all New England is bad. New Hampshire is known for its freedom loving nature and Maine doesn't have alot of gun restrictions. As the states turn more urban and less rural there are more restrictive laws and problems. New York state as an example northern NY is like Maine with the Adorondaks and western NY is like Penn. with Allegany st park.
But NYC has all the votes
