What are the mistakes a noob builder stepping up from ar-15 is likely to make that would ruin the accuracy potential? Assume I buy top of the line barrel, trigger, etc. If I build a rifle that doesn't shoot at least as well as my buddy's new Ruger Precision Rifle, I'll never hear the end of it.

I'm willing to deal with $500-$1000 over the cost of the ruger for semi-auto and the fun of building it if I can at least equal it in accuracy. It would be great if I can do better but those are my money and performance targets.

If any of y'all have built a rifle that comes close to my money & perf targets, I'd greatly appreciate the details of your build and experiences good and bad along the way.

related question: is there any hype free data around on .308 .vs. 6.5 creedmoor barrel life? I'd estimate shooting maybe 1500 rounds a year with this gun and if I got 3 years out of a barrel i'd be happy - 5 and i'd be ecstatic

dang, should had coffee before posting.

I'm thinking DPMS Gen1 pattern build(not really an ar-10). Opinions and experiences about that design choice also greatly appreciated.

You're going to have a very hard time equaling an accurate bolt action with an autoloader. And whatever people may say about the RPR, they appear to be accurate.

I have a LaRue 7.62 tOBR on order and intend to have a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel made for this DPMS pattern rifle. I think there are several issues including whether a DPMS barrel extension will fit this particular upper or if the tOBR may be a thousandth under; the length of the gas system so pressures are reduced at the gas port, which has me looking for a rifle length +2 configuration; the best length for the barrel and which profile barrel I’d prefer.

I’m under no illusion a gas operated 6.5 will be as accurate as a bolt gun, but I think I could be sub ½ MOA with a good barrel and good ammo.

It can be done very easily with a gas gun, just not cheaply. Only had time to run 50 rds of GMM thru it so far and under 1/2 MOA, even got a couple groups in the .3's. But the barrel, BCG, and trigger exceed the MSRP of the Ruger. It's a 308 not a 6.5.

You'll have a tall order getting a gas gun to come close to a bolt action in accuracy, but you can get close.
Buy the best barrel and trigger that you can afford, and set up the rest with parts that match what your wanting to do with the rifle.
