I have been hanging out for awhile and have to say I have read some intersting posts here. Very much admire THR Colt Walker club and have seriously thought of joining! Also liked the pics of the Howdah Hunter, but don't have any tigers in the area to hunt! The recoil alone must be brutal! I have a Navy Arms replica of the 1858 Remington New Army, got it from my father and was my first black powder shooter as a kid. At some point the barrel was replaced after someone bulged the barrel. The first round was lodged in the barrel and the second blew everything out and the front sight popped off. Now it shoots low and to the right. But I have been thinking of getting back into the percussion game with maybe a 3rd model Dragoon and an 1851 Navy just to fool with. Never have shot the big Colts, but handled a Walker at a gun shop recently. A little to big, unless you are Josey Wales:D! Looking forward to shooting more cap and ball this spring...

The Walker is defiantly a large revolver, but is really a easy one to shoot. The 3rd model dragoon is basically a scaled down version of the Walker with several improvements. I would like to add a dragoon to my collection. I like the 51 Navy over all C&B revolvers I have ever handled. I have a late sixties Uberti and a 2nd gen Colt in 51 Navy. They seem to have a natural feel to them that I don't get with any other Colt.

I have a 2nd Model Uberti Dragoon and haven’t a bad word to say about it. Fit and finish is very good, timing exquisite and shoots really well. Shooting with a full load of BP is wonderful (and very smokey!)

Overall an excellent gun. The only reason I picked a 2nd Model is purely aesthetic – I liked the shape of the trigger guard!

I have a WALKER, 3rd Dragoon, 1851 Navy, 1860 Army and a 1858 Remington and they are all fun to shoot but the 1851 Navy has to be the best as far as balance and feel are concerned. The 1860 Army comes in a close second. The WALKER and Dragoon are very nice shooting but a bit on the heavy side. Nothing even comes close to the WALKER when it comes to the "drama" and excitement of shooting a big bore BP pistol, you will draw a crowd when you fire one of these hand canons.
Either one is a good choice.

If you find a Walker too heavy, good change that the Dragoon will be too much for comfort as well. It's not that much lighter.
The 1851 is great but I find the sites a bit poor.

I like that shooting box! What kind of a set up do you have there?

I bought this box of a guy on fleabay. He made it from an old RAF storage box from the 50s. I only use it at ranges where they don’t allow loading from a flask so I pre-measure BP into the vials.

Here’s a couple more pics:

Otherwise I just use this toolbox:

Nice, much nicer than those MTM boxes. My dad made a custom pistol box out of an old wooden ammo box years ago. Nothing fancy, but you could carry a couple shooting irons in there.

I have "well should say had" a Uberti 3rd Model Dragoon that I bought in '89, sweet shooter & mine liked the slightly heavy loads too so when she was at the range she had a many a heads turned her way.
It resides with my brother because he said that he needed it, Man am I the sucker. :banghead:

I think the only problem you'll have out of any one that you buy is finding enough time to make her speak her words. :D

I really like that box & think I may need to fashion one similar.

I've always liked the Walker but I'd opt for the Dragoon mainly because of the inadequate loading lever clip. Can you imagine the cursing that gun got when used in battle and the lever would drop locking the cylinder. Colt in their wisdom corrected that problem in the Dragoon. I'd like to know why they thought they had to tame it too.
