Considering an M1911 and a Sig P220 (SAO or DAK)

I've read a ton about both the M1911 (various makes & models) and the P220. I'm interested in one in a .45acp. I'd like to eventually get both, but I'll be stuck getting one now and the other sometime down the road. I have handled (but not gotten the opportunity to shoot) both, so I get the difference in feel between the Sig and 1911 (and the 1911's do feel nice, but I like them both ergonomically speaking), and I like the way both feel and aim and function (shy of actually firing them, yet), but I'm obviously not an expert on either.

Purpose: I'm interested in one for home/self defense with the outside possibility of carrying it if Wisconsin ever allows CCW, but I'd still like the most full-size version possible (e.g. 4.4" or 5" barrel) that could even remotely be used for CCW since it might or might not ever happen. That said, it would be mainly for the range with the emphasis being on reliability over competition-level grouping.

As for my thoughts: For the Sig, I'm thinking of the P220 in SAO. I am, however, at least somewhat contemplative of the DAK, as well as any arguments for going with the W. German DA/SA (presuming I can find a nice used). I'd be game for any considerations between different models, barrel lengths, pro's/con's between the three triggers(SAO, DAK, DA/SA) or available models. I'd also be interested in the difference in quality between the W. German Sigs and the more modern versions (and the SAO in particular, which is presumably either German or American in origin?).

For the 1911, I have two thoughts. Either buy a nice one (e.g. Springfield [Loaded or Operator or whatever] or Kimber or STI or Colt or et al.) and pretty much be done with it, or buy as cheap a used one down the road after the Sig Sauer (whenever a nice deal comes along) for as cheap as I can and just slowly tweak/upgrade/modify it if/as needed.

Any thoughts as far as which one to get (first)? As noted, I'm thinking the Sig first since they are reportedly somewhat more reliable out-of-the-box (which with a hypothetical hd/sd type gun is a consideration should I ever be in the position to actually need it) unless I get a full custom job 1911 for >$2k, and then I can take my time and make a (hopefully fun) project out of the cheap 1911 if/when a good deal pops up, using the gunsmith for most of the work but still choosing what I might want to upgrade and taking my time to spread out the cost. Still, I'm open to arguments one way or the other.

-Cheers

Be patient and save your money. Good deals come along all the time.

If you haven't shot what you think you want to get........ you need to find one to test drive to see how you like it.

On the 1911's there are differences between the full size and commander length. Some people can shoot both equally well, and others shoot one or the other better.

I can't comment on a P220, haven't shot one.
