Considering AR build in 9mm

I'm in the same boat and don't have one yet. I can't decide between a mag block and a dedicated lower.

I can say that i hate the way the glock mag looks angled back out of the receiver, but glock mags make so much sense!
Another thing to consider is this - Reliability of feeding.

With Colt pattern lowers, the rounds from the magazine are made to bump the feed ramp before entering the chamber. So if you have feed lip to ramp to chamber alignment issues, you will experience reliability of feeding issues, especially when chamber gets dirty from carbon fouling which is common due to blowback action which leaks A LOT of gas and blows them around and back towards case base (This is why PCC spent brass is always dirty with black soot).

With Glock pattern lowers, magazine sticks up higher and rounds are essentially pointed towards the chamber (This is why magazine is tilted back in mag well) and when pushed by bolt, gets inserted essentially straight into the chamber, and feeding stays reliable even when chamber gets dirty from carbon fouling.

So my suggestion would be:
  1. Dedicated Glock lower
  2. Glock mag block
  3. Dedicated Colt lower
  4. Metal Colt mag block
  5. Do not use plastic mag block as thin plastic on either side of magazine will deform over time and affect feed angle

I have the PSA Glock lower and a 16” upper. Truthfully I don’t love it. For the weight I would just as soon shoot 300 Blackout or even 223, especially since I had to add an extra heavy buffer to mine to keep it from prematurely extracting.

For the same cost you can probably find a used Camp Carbine or a new Ruger PC Carbine. I like both more than my 9mm AR.

The plus side to the AR platform is that there are far more accessories.
You can reduce the buffer weight by going to a flat buffer spring and putting a spacer in the back of the buffer tube.
Or you could hit the gym more often a few work on those arms. ;)

It’s a rifle, not a Barbie. How many accessories does it need?

FYI the magwell insert you posted requires you to make cuts into the plastic of your Glock mags to work with the stock mag catch. I don’t know about the long-term consequences of that for your mags. Probably none, but If I get one of those for my SBR lower I will probably buy some extra mags just for it.

It’s not how many accessories, but the fact that you have more options so that you can set it up the way you like it. Just think about the pistol grip. There are dozens of different grips for the AR for you to choose from. The Ruger and Marlin, you have no choice..
I have mags that are dedicated for my carbine. Most are 32 round mags.

So you actually own the Tork adapter? It works well for you?

No. I was just showing options that are out there. I used a Glock mag lower from Joe Bob Outfitters. It takes all AR part. .
I first had it set up with a standard upper but didn’t care for the forward assist.

This is how I have my carbine set up right now with an Areo upper without a forward assist.

I know that a lot people are happy with the Marlin Camp Carbine and the new Ruger carbine. I think they’re cool. I would love to see someone create a topic comparing them to an AR9.
