I've been trying to consolidate my cartridges for a little while now and am having trouble deciding witch ones to keep and witch ones to get rid of.

So my question is if you were going to drop a caliber witch one and why or if you were going to start shooting a caliber which one would you start shooting.

(I have pistol caliber carbines so not just just rifle cartridges)

.22 magnum
.223/5.56
.57x28
7.62x39
5.45x39
7.62x54r
7.62x51
.30 06
.30-30
.30-40
.45-70
.45-90
.303
7.5 mas
8mm mauser
7.63 mauser
38 special

Well, not counting my more obscure cartridges like 7.7 JAP and 7.5 MAS I would get rid of my 22LRs. I just don't find them interesting to shoot anymore.

Might help if you said what cartridges you have rifles chambered in though.

Thanks I thought about that, but I figure nobody needed to know.

I'll edit them in.

Seeing your list, I'd still go with the 7.5 MAS and the 22LR. Most of the other calibers I really like. Or I should say I like the guns that chamber them like the 455 Webley.

Hum, I for one would drop the .22 about last, as it's the cheapest thing you have to shoot when you just want to plink.

I would suggest deciding those you keep for collectors value and those you would like to sell to get something else,

I would make three stacks,
those you shoot
those you collect (and thus don't need much ammo since you're not shooting it)

and those someone else can appreciate more than you, and pay you the difference in appreciation in cold hard cash.

Not knowing if you reload or not this is somewhat difficult to answer but I'll give it a go, also not knowing what your uses are doesn't make it easier.

I'd keep the .22LR, .223/5.56 or 7.62x39, 7.62x51 or .30-06, 12GA, .45acp, .357 mag.

7.62x51 or .30-06 because either one will work for pretty much the same job, in my uses anyway.
.22LR, cheap, everywhere, good for honing skills and introducing new shooters.
5.56/7.62x39 kinda fit the same bill for me here as well, like the x51 and .30-06 can go with either or.
.357 cause the firearms can shoot .38s as well, and .45acp because I like it and don't have much experience with .40S&W to compare between the two.

ok I think this answers your question

Shoot

12 gauge
.22
.223/5.56
.57x28
7.62x51
38 special/357 magnum
40 S&W
10mm
9mm nato
357 sig

Collect (basically shoot less)

7.62x54r
.30 06
.30-30
.30-40
.45-70
.45-90
.303
7.5 mas
7.63 mauser
455 eley/webely
45 colt

Sell

7.62x39
8mm mauser
44 magnum
44-40
45 acp
.22 magnum

unsure

5.45x39

The last one I'm really unsure of it's basically russian 5.56, but it's really cheap but the guns are usually worth alot more in my area and what I have in this caliber has a combined ammo/mag/rifle value of over $3000

I don't reload currently, but i'm planning on buying stuff to do 455 and maybe 303(I have alot but I shoot this more than any of the C&R's).

I'd ditch these:

5.7x28
.30-40
.45-90
7.5 MAS
7.63 Mauser- Maybe if it's not a cool Mauser Broomhandle or something otherwise interesting
.44-40
.455 Eley/Webley

For the most part, these are weird cartridges that can be very difficult to find and expensive if you can.

Without knowing your wants and needs, it can be difficult to recommend anything more specific.

I recently condensed my calibers to the following 12:

9mm Luger
.40 cal S&W
.45 cal ACP

.22LR
.22Mag
.22-250
.223/5.56
.257 Roberts
.308/7.62x51
.30 Carbine
7.62x39

12ga

I figure if I can't plink, hunt, mess around with this group I don't need to do it.

Once I acquire a firearm, I tend to hang on to it. It definitely doesn't hurt to have it, and if you dont shoot it much, just dont buy ammo for it :). That being said, I dont really buy a large variety of calibers. Most of my purchases are in 9mm, 12ga., 22lr, 5.56x45, or 7.62x39, and I try to keep it that way so I dont have to have 50 different kinds of ammo.

I think I'm about to acquire something in 6.8 SPC, with 7.62x51, .380, and .38/.357 also on my wish list. I could be totally content with only having the first 5 calibers that I listed though, as I consider the others to be more "special purpose" calibers, since most of my shooting is paper targets at the range.

If I really needed to sell some firearms though, to get money or make room or for whatever reason, of the ones you posted I would keep:
12 gauge
.22
.223/5.56
7.62x51
38 special/357 magnum
9mm nato
7.62x39

I'd ditch these:

5.7x28
.30-40
.45-90
7.5 MAS
7.63 Mauser- Maybe if it's not a cool Mauser Broomhandle or something otherwise interesting
.44-40
.455 Eley/Webley

The 7.63 is a broomhandle, most of the calibers your saying to ditch are from inherited C&R firearms that get shot a few times a year.

the one that is't is the 5.7x28 and its the P90s round and I personally dig it.

On another subject why do I hear people say to ditch the .22, that kind of like saying don't ever have a cheeseburger again. The .22 is one of the quintessential american cartridges, I think I'll get rid of apple pie while I'm at it.

What about the .357 sig?

You have firearms in 10mm, .40S&W, 9mm and .45. If you don't have enough defensive pistols chambered in those you also have a bunch of revolver calibers.

What if you grouped your guns and tried to decide what gun/caliber combinations you want to keep and what stuff you want to sell? I mean, how many old lever rifles do you need?

Or you could just not get rid of any guns/calibers and be a happy camper.

axxxel

the 45's are defintely going bye bye

the 357 sigs are barrels for my .40 cal sig and glock

there's just one 10mm that gets shot the other is an unfired old colt thats an investment.

I'm seriosly thinking about getting rid of all russian calibers except for a cheapo mosin.

Some other useful information would be what you do with all of these calibers. I dont hunt, so mine are all aimed at defense and plinking.

I only have seven calibers to worry about (.22lr, .38 special, 9mm, .45ACP, 5.56, 7.62x39, and 12 gauge), although I have thought about 5.45x39 since its cheap and .308 just because I want an M1A scout...

I've walked away from good deals on guns because I didn't want to have to buy another caliber.
