It sure looks alot like blaze orange. Can you buy blazeorange die or spray paint? It'd be a lot cheaper to color clothes I already have.

Even if you can find the dye somewhere, you'd probably have to dye the clothes white first or bleach them, so the blaze-orange would have a workable base. Putting blaze-orange over a drab or dark color isn't going to do anything but make a dark, rusty color.

You might want to just look in to a cheap Wal-Mart type all purpose blaze orange vest, usually found for about 15 bucks, to slip over your hunting clothes. Seems like it would be a lot easier than bleaching, etc etc etc....

Good luck.

For hunting, you need to avoid clothing or vests that are intended for traffic control (construction) purposes. In order to meet the DOT's requirements (MUTCD - Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) most of that stuff has to be 'retro-reflectorized'. That means that not only is it orange, but it's also shiny and reflective, and it blasts UV radiation like a beacon.

Deer can't distinguish typical colors very well as we percieve the visible spectrum, but they can see into the ultraviolet range a lot better than we can. That means wearing an orange construction vest while in the woods is the equivalent of walking around blasting an air horn every 2 minutes. The same thing can result if you take normal clothing and wash it with detergent that includes brighteners, btw.

Unfortunately, dye doesn't work well either. I just can't see getting something orange enough to meet most state's requirements.

I'd take that white coat and dye it green or black (white is a major no-no to wear when deer hunting) and then go to Wal-Mart and pick up one of those el cheapo blaze orange polyester fleece pull-over vests (less than $10) to put on over the jacket.

I like to hunt with a very light orange vest (I've had it for 20 years) over all my other layered clothing. That way if it warms up during the day, you can peel off other layers and your not stuck with a bulky, hot, cumbersome heavy jacket.

Wal-mart has those light orange hunting vests for a couple of bucks, IIRC. Basically just a piece of polyester material, with 3/4" wide elastic bands on the sides for under the arms and a piece of velcro to hold it together in the front. Cheap but it works.

Kinda like this, but with one piece of velcro tab in the front and no pockets.

Lets you dress for the weather and you can add/remove layers and still be safe.
