Lot's of SHTF and TEOTW threads with all sorts of crazy scenarios got me thinking that a continuing story thread might turn out pretty cool with all that creativity out there. Anyway, you don't have to turn out a novel and you don't have to be a writer to participate, just continue the story. If you've never written anything before, now is a great time to start. Imagine if you were telling a story to a friend and just type it out.

Simply pick up where the last person left off, you can take the story in a whole new direction or continue with the last person's theme. Please keep your response down to 3 paragraphs maximum. Incorporate whatever you want, politics, science, guns, you name it. The only rule I ask is that you please leave real people out of it. Otherwise, have at it.

I'll get things started, it is simple enough so here goes nothing.

EDIT: Put a #) in front of your post where # is the next sequential number. That way if 2 people post at the same time, we know that they are both posting the next paragraph after whatever one they were responding to.

1)
It was an exceptionally hot summer this year; with almost no humidity, there was just an unrelenting, overpowering heat. Standing outside in the shade it was 128 degrees with a hot breeze. Looking across the barren landscape that was once covered with rolling green grass you could see the waves from the heat rippling in the air. There were no clouds in the sky to give us any sort of protection from the sun and it had been almost a year since I'd seen any birds or insects. I could hear a murmer of voices on the wind, their muffled prayers to whatever God that had doomed us going unnoticed. I wondered how much hotter it must have been in that church that it was out here.

It wasn't like it came out of nowhere either, some scientists predicted this is where we were headed, but as usual the academics never agreed on anything and the politicians fed the masses whatever story they thought we would believe. 2007 seems like just yesterday, but in the three short years since, we had seen hotter and hotter weather with records being broken daily. It started out with really erratic weather, 90 degrees one day, then 40 the next. It wasn't until the summer of 2007 that things started to get scary, that's when the second big heat wave hit. It was the hottest year in recorded history and it was just two years before, that the first wave killed all those people in France.

This time it was different, this time we saw the effects right here at home in the US. It started slowly enough with the rolling blackouts. Pretty simple math really, too many people using too much power and the grid just couldn't handle it. Whole city blocks were without power for a few hours, then whole days....

#2) I watched children play in an in-ground pool that was only half full. They were lethargic and their skin was red. It was hell outside but water was a good way to cool down. The once lush midwestern town was starting to look like an old west ghost town. Instead of sand and tumbleweed blowing through the streets, it was dry topsoil and refuse.

People called it a drought, as if it were temporary. The area's shrinking water supply was being used largely to put out the ever increasing house fires. The harsh sun was baking everything dry and turning it in to kindling.

Wearing boots, jeans, a long-sleeved khaki shirt, a pistol and spare mags, and a rough old slouch hat, I fit in pretty well into the faux-western landscape. I leaned against the brick structure that was the bank, my hat put down over my eyes, imagining myself wading in an icy river at the mouth of a cave. I was torn from my happy place when a rough voice called out,

"You make an order?"

I looked up and a slovenly figure dropped a tan jerry can on the brown grass. The contents sloshed audibly

Cool idea.
I'm betting THR'ers up to the challenge but....is there any chance your TEOTWAWKI story could start some other way besides global warming?

It's like participating in a sensitivity class run by ALGORE.

S-

haha, I did that on purpose for a couple reasons actually. But mainly because I was trying to think of a somewhat plausible problem that would affect the whole planet. It could just as well have been some new disease, no more babies (ala Children of Men) or anything else. I just threw the warming thing out there because it seems to be in all the headlines lately.

I mean, someone could take the warming theme and have it stem from an interplanetary disaster, alien heat beam or who knows what. The core of the earth stopped spinning, etc. Gives people a chance to be creative.

Personally, I don't really think we're the problem, but that's a whole 'nother thread. :)

3) “Yes I made the order, three gallons of diesel for 50 rounds .308 AP”

I handed him the rounds, and took my tan jerry can and started to walk home.

4)
God was it hot! I was NOT looking forward to the mile and a half walk back to my house; especially not carrying a heavy can of diesel fuel. But I really had no choice.

Since fuel rationing started last fall, any kind of petro fuel was getting really scarce. How is anyone supposed to do anything on fifteen gallons per month? No matter how hard I tried to limit my travels, I was out of gas. It broke my heart to part with that Singaporan .308, but I had to get to work for the next 3 days until my next ration voucher was good. But hey, at least the winters weren't cold anymore. I couldn't imagine how we'd have survived a cold winter on fifteen gallons of heating oil a month.

As I walked down the street; the street that just a few short years ago was filled with kids riding their bikes, with mothers walking their babies, with young and old couples out for a stroll, a street that now looked like a scene from some third world country, I couldn't help but notice the four young men down the block noticing me. The first one to see me made a motion in my direction and his friends turned and gave me a quick glance. They huddled together for a few seconds and then disappeared between two houses. "This can't be good", I thought.

I touched the Hi Power once, I guess to confirm that it was still there, although I knew that it was. Its weight hung on my belt as a constant reminder that there was no plastic on this pistol.

haha. Now our hero is carrying a HP, not a 1911 or a glock.

#5

The four of them emerged from between the houses and as they drew closer I could see that they appeared freshly shaved wearing suits and ties. I was completely baffled. The leader approached me as I pulled a tighter grip on my HP and asked if I knew the lord and had been saved. They wished to give me more information about the Jesus Christ and the Church of Later Day Saints.

I could not believe how healthy and clean they looked in a world where everyone else looked as though they had woken up on the wrong side of the dumpster with a bad hangover. That got me to thinking, maybe the 30 cases of .308 I had saved up were not the smartest investment that I could have made. Maybe I should have put up some food and soap and razors..... too late now. I considered drawing on them and making them lead me to their stash but a look at the houses convinced me this would be a good spot for snipers to set on the roof tops.

#6) "Geeesh", I thought, "what has my country come to?" I have delt with snipers in three other countries, but to have worry about them here...this is just deplorable. I better hurry home because night is going to fall soon and I left my rifle at the house. That M1a sure would be more comforting on this dark, lonely trip to the house. Too bad President Hillary Clinton banned it and I have to keep it in cognito these days.

I know it's only a matter of time before the Federal Firearm Inspection Bureau shows up at the door. Of course they won't find my rifles, but that ammo, that thirty cases is gonna be awfully hard to hide.

No matter, I'll worry about that when the time comes. Right now I just need to get to the house and make sure my water rations were dropped off on schedule this morning.

7)
As I continued down the street, I was surprised when five Ninjas descencded from a tree right in front of me. They did their usual ninja thing and waved their nunchucks and little sickle things around.

My cat-like reflexes and the Hi Power knew what to do. Threat eliminated.

I continued walking home. As I approached the house, I could see the empty water bottles sitting next to the garage, just where I had left them.

:D Sorry. I'm a smartass. You can ignore this segment if you want.

8) So I entered though my garage and through my keys on the kitchen table and noticed that my laptop was open and TheHighRoad.org was up and I was logged in. I frequent THR but I always logout afterwards. It was open to a thread where I had commented on the probability of success of a small militia taking on a factions of a broken union during a hypothetical new American revolution.

I know I logged out and closed my computer before I left my house to save the small amount of remaining battery I had left and I have it set to turn off after 4 minutes of idle. So they must still be in the house I thought...

9) Dammit, they've been here. I called up the boys and decided it was time to have a meeting. We had to hurry up and put that ammo somewhere. Tomorrow morning the black helicopters would come and the FFIB would take my ammo and cart me off to jail.

Closer inspection revealed that the water bottles had been punctured. Well, maybe they don't plan on arresting us afterall. Maybe they are coming in looking for a fight. Yep, things just took a turn for the worse.

10)

"God, that must really suck to hand carry that jug of what... probably fuel," I thought. I followed behind the guy, blue jeans, khaki shirt. He smartly delt with the missionaries, but I noticed him "sweep" his back. That confirmed it he was armed. We need Kevin's assistance, but doubt that him and his association will readily help us.

"K, Bandit,"
"Bandit go ahead."
"He's going inside," I told Robert, the skinny little s#*t that snuck into Kevin's house. He and two others were to located and secure Kevin before I and my guys arrived.

We know that Kevin was a staunch supporter of the US Constitution, but would he help in our insurrection. President Hitlery has got to go.

We all knew what we we're doing. Basically if they locate and secure his weapons prior to my teams arrival. No sense having him shoot us, if he doesn't like our propcaught us, we'd be tried for treason and likely would be executed. We all volunteered. Most of us had military experience, some like me had law enforcement, and others did not.

"He saw the computer annndd he's going outside. Crap he came back in.. Pistactictctctccc.." I heard Rob deploy the Taser, "We've got him cuffed."

I quickly walked across the street while Jim and Alley appeared from the far side of the house next door. John the big ex NYPD cop and bouncer opened the door for my arrival. Jim and Alley followed me in. Kevin was on the kitchen floor, gagged with pantyhose with his hands cuffed and his feet hogtied. Robert was kneeling on Kevin's back pulling the darts from his Kevin's flesh. I glanced back and saw Alley's big brown eyes glance at me. She's a good kid. Back to work idiot, worry about that later.

Robert stood and with my help we sat Kevin on the couch. I pulled his HP and set it on the coffee table. He looked at me in a daze, until he realized it was me. His face changed from suprise to anger in a flash. I could only imaging his thoughts.

"Kevin, we got to talk..."

11) So here I sit, Kevin Sykes, former Delta, a man who retired a full bird colonel, hog tied by this second rate soldier and his squad of second rate hillbillies. Roth Johnson and I share a long history. I denied his entry into Delta twenty years prior. He was hot headed, angry and was a bad fit for my unit which prided itself on covertness and proffessionalism. As mad as I was, I couldn't help but grin a little at my current situation. If there was one area where Roth shined it was tactics. Damn, he knew his stuff.

"How are you, Kevin?", Roth fired across the room. "How long's it been? Fifteen years? Sixteen?"

"Not long enough." I felt my blood begin to boil. No one irked me like this guy. Nobody.

"What a way to talk to an old friend. Sad that it's come to this really. We are alot alike you and me."

He was talking through his a**. He wants my guns. I know that's what this is about. That girl, damn she is pretty. How does she figure in to all of this?

Roth interupted my thought.

"Let's cut the bulls***, Kevin. You have something that I need, and I am willing to make a deal to get them. Can we talk like adults? Can I untie you?"

"What kind of deal can we possibly make? I want nothing to do with you and your miserable attempt at revolution."

That girl is getting antsy. I just don't know how in the hell a beautiful, young girl like her ended up in my house with my Browning in her hands.

Johnson continued his babble and started on his revolutionary rhetoric about how we needed to put the Republicans back in charge and give this country back to the people. I tried to feed his ego as best as possible to stall for more time while my boys were getting into position to show. The ammendment to the International American Voter Freedom Act that had dropped secret ballots and allowed anyone in the world to vote in US elections had caught the repubs by surprise. I felt for him but there was little to be done now.

Suddenly he said it; ''They are not going to show you know. My boys are going to take them down before they get to within two blocks. We will be careful but they are dangerous and could get hurt''

I had my doubts, my guys were getting old and were no longer in their prime but in their day they had been the best in the world.

13)
Hands and feet bound behind my back, I had rolled onto my side so I wasn't face down on the floor. I had to crane my neck to look up at Johnson. The heat was oppressive, we were all feeling it. I could hear one of his men in my kitchen, surely keeping an eye on the hill behind my house as he paced back and forth, the sand crunching beneath his feet on my tile floor. Johnson was sweating profusely, I could barely stand the stench coming off that man, seemed like he hadn't showered in weeks. Sweat was running down his neck and being absorbed by his dark t-shirt, collecting in a vshape on his chest. Looking past him from this angle on my side I could get a better view of the girl they were dragging along. Jesus she was beautiful, I couldn't help but stare at her, my mind began to wander.

I knew my unit was coming shortly, I didn't check back in when I returned from my scouting trip, it should only take them a few more minutes. I already knew how it would play out, Johnson was good in a tactical situation and was top notch at coordinating an armed assault, but he never did know how to keep that damned flag. I cracked a dry smile at the thought of what was in store for him.

Johnson fumed, he threw back his chair and drove a boot into my stomach. With a load groan what air I had in my lungs went rushing out, I felt the dull but strong pain that only a gut kick could provide roll over me. I coughed a barely audible response.

"wait...."

"What, is there something you want to tell me?"

Johnson's breath was worse than his body odor, I practically felt it hit me in the face.

"mmmmph..... brush your teeth" I croaked.

It probably wasn't the brightest thing for me to say.

"Umph", another boot kicked solidly into me, my back this time.

"arrrrrghhhh" I cried out.

Johnson just looked down at me, I could hear the soldier that had just kicked me in the back chuckling. I tried to slowly regain my composure and craned my neck upward again to get a better look at Johnson. His face was expressionless, he slowly reached behind his back and withdrew a very large knife, I knew what he planned on doing with that. He held it down at his side as he looked at me, almost reconciling with himself what he was about to do. Looking past him at the clock on the table where I place my keys I could see that I was 20 seconds away from reaction time and I knew my guys would be right on schedule. I started to laugh.

The soldier to Johnson's left decided to speak, "...

14) "Hey boss!", the soldier fired across the room, "We got humvees coming over the hill!"

"Dammit!", screamed Johnson. "Wilder, you take Kemp and Murphy and head West. Alley, you and Miller come with me. Renedevouz at location #4 at 05:00 tomorrow morning."

I was preparing myself for the feel of cold steel in my ribcage that I knew was coming. And still, all I could focus on was that girl. Did he say her name was Alley? Her beauty was beyond belief. Her hair shined in the moonlight and made her look like a goddess. The neon light danced off her light brown eyes and the pale aura outlined her perfect curves in way that put me into a trance.

"This ain't over between me and you, Kevin." Johnson's rotten breath brought me back to reality.

Was he really going to let me live?

My question was answered when the soldiers dashed for the door.

I heard two humvees grind to a stop behind my house just seconds later. Two more came to a rapid halt on either side of my front door soon after. For about a second there was a serene silence...

Blam, blam , blam, blam, blam...the gunfire right outside the door was deafening. Soon it erupted from every direction. I watched as the bullets punched .30 caliber holes through the wooden beams of my house and for those few moments I was glad the Johnson had left me in the floor and not tied to the chair.

It was over as quickly as it had begun. The gunfire ceased and the humvees roared off into the dark insearch of their attackers.

I had to get out of here before they came back. I struggled to my feet, my ribs and back still stinging from the blows of Johnson's heavy boots. I hobbled my way to the kitchen cabinet in search of a knife. I was pleasently suprised to find a dirty steak knife sitting on the edge of the counter. Thank G_d I hadn't washed dishes that morning. I made short work of the nylon rope that bound my wrists and ankles.

I made a dash down the hall to the badroom and quickly lifted to heavy wooden plank that concealed my gear. I pulled the Colt Defender and it's holster first, followed by my MOLLE gear and bug out bag. I hurriedly found my Keltec P3AT and strapped it to my ankle. I knew I had to hurry, but I wanted to be prepared if a fight found me. I felt my way around the dark, musty hole until my hand touched the familiar plastic stock of my SOCOM 16. "Just you and me now ol friend."

I paused at the front door long enough to insure that all of the FFIB goons had left. Once I was sure I was alone I made my move outside. I knew I had to hurry up and make my way to the hideout 7 miles away. It was gonna be a long, hard run in my condition, but I had to make sure the boys were okay.

I had jsut started my run when I heard a whimper in the dark. Instictively, I knelt and focused my attention on the cutover which produced the sound. My ribs hurt something awful. I was gonna kill Johnson the next time I saw him. Another whimper focused me on the task at hand. I began to move slowly toward the noise and caught sight of a white T-shirt. I moved closer and flipped the SOCOM's safety to the fire position. I pointed the rifle over a short berm and placed the barrel against the white T-shirt. The feminine whine caught me completely off guard.

Alley's face was clearly recognizable even in the dark. The ragged exit wound in her stomach was bleeding profusely. What in the hell do I do now?

I can't wait to see what y'all do with this story between now and Sunday night when I get back into town. Hope the thread stays open and stays hot. Lots of good stuff here.

15) "You have to help me."

Her words cut straight through to my soul. Summoning as much false bravado as I could, I replied:

'I don't have to do s#!t, sister. Keep applying direct pressure and answer me with the truth, and maybe I'll let you live."

She stared for a few seconds and then looked away, muttering.

"Just leave me here to die then. You're just like them; self-serving, no heart, not a thought for anyone else."

"How do you know them?" I asked

"There's no time" she said "If you care enough to help me live you need to get me to a doctor. I know one that is independent, working underground..." she heaved a deep breath and wheezed it out slowly "...under the radar. He's my best chance, and he has more resources than the two of us put together."

The idea was intriguing, but I had my own mess to clean up and the woman complicated things. Still, she was badly hurt and those eyes... Oh, those piercing eyes...

"I'm getting weaker by the second and we aren't even moving. We need to act fast. Help me up."

I hadn't realized the decision to help her had been made, but I went along just the same. What else was I to do? I couldn't just leave her to die. Helping her to her feet, I noticed she smelled vaguely of a perfume I was familiar with: Wild Hyacinth. I shook off the urge to ask her about it as she draped her arm around my neck.

"We need to head south. Travel parallel to the main road until you see a church, then head due east in the treeline, using that old radio antenna as a landmark to head toward. I need to stop talking now before I throw up or pass out. It'll be about a twenty minute walk from the church. He'll see us coming. Need to get quiet now..."

She slumped against me and stumbled along by my side, her chin against her chest. The church was visible in the distance, but it looked to be a good mile away and she was still losing blood. I squared my shoulders and started plodding forward, keeping off the main road. Who was this doctor, and how did I not know who he was when he lived so close by?

Normally, I can walk five miles an hour over level ground, if I'm not carrying anything, and I had already been preparing myself for a tough slog at a slower pace, with all the gear I'd brought. Half-dragging Alley with me was going to cut into that pace a whole lot more. I set my jaw and worked at finding the most efficient gait.
Don't think about it, just do it
I couldn't remember who'd told me that first, maybe my old man, maybe my Scout master. I knew it would be useless to calculate the number of times I'd heard it from drill sergeants.
I began to think in short terms: break the task up into small parts; first, to the end of the block, then the next, and so on. The heat was still oppressive, even with the sun getting lower. Every third or fourth step, I checked my surroundings, this time right, then left, making sure I wasn't followed, checking the buildings to see if I was being watched. In between, I tried to distract my mind by noticing other details. As I passed the end of the first block, a coyote trotted out into the street, not twenty yards ahead. It froze and stared at me for a second, then continued on as though it owned the whole town.
Scavengers. They were everywhere now, in large numbers; I'd been noticing their increase for a few years, now. Flocks of turkey vultures, like slow-motion tornadoes darkening the sky. Rats, larger every year, crows, oppossum, raccoons, roaches, ants, flies -- and all the while, fewer and fewer predators. Well, the scavengers had plenty of work to do, what with heat, malnutrition, bad water, no water, disease outbreaks -- and bullets. They'd be feeding already, back behind me. And if I failed, this girl was going to be their next buffet.
