got the new 527 carbine in 7.62,,,

when i aim with the ball of the front sight setting in the notch and centered on the target at 100 yds it shoots about 6 inches high

so i call CZ to find out about getting the correct height front sight

he tells me he can't tell me how much an increase by one step in the sight will affect placement down range

not even a ball park

then he goes into stuff about different loads blah blah blah

(i plan to settle on 1 or 2 loads)

and not only that but they are $8 per sight

so then i asks, "well then what is the "most correct" sight picture for these sights?"' (thinking i'm using them wrong)

He says, "thats personal preference, sir, i cant tell you that."

seeing hows i was getting nowhere, the conversation ended soon after.

anyone want to toss a few thoughts on this at me?

any help, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

;)

No adjustable sights on it? I'm kinda suprised. I don't think I've ever seen a rifle without and adjustable rear sight.

Everyone has told me you hold the sights just below the target, but I always thought that was just chickening out for not being able to adjust elevation on many pistol sights and can never remember which of my guns need which sight picutre.

My vote if the rear sight isn't adjustable would be to see if you could mount a peep sight or install some appropriate optics for your use. Sights are critical IMHO and contribute a lot to the accuracy and usability of a weapon.

Summing up, I think you're pooched.

Top of front sight ball even with rear sight top centered in notch and 6" high at 100 yds?

Hold at 6 o clock of target (i.e. below center). Shoot group.
Measure group.
Note group location relative to center of target.

Repeat at 150 yds. Note same results (group size-location)

Repeat at 50 or 75 yds. Note results.

Make little chart. Laminate and Tape to stock.

Do that for each load.

Enjoy carbine. Some rifles do better at a 6 o clock hold than center of target initially. Becomes second nature after awhile.

Adios

What's the exact distance between the front sight and the rear sight, measured from the driver's side?

you should be able to make the calculation by simple geometry:

An example of how to adjust the fixed sight for elevation:

Distance from front to rear sight = 16"

Distance from front sight to target = 100 (yds) x 36"=3600"

16 / 3600 = .00444445

distance to move front rear for zeroed impact =

.00444445 x 6(number of inches high) = .02666667"

so if you deepen the rear sight notch and lower the leaf, or raise the front sight by .0266667"

The round should be in the bullseye.

Not sure why the smith would not tell you this.

He's not a real smith - he plays one on the telephone and internet.

I've had an issue with my 452 that he totally dosen't understand - as he's somewhat challenged.

If you're talking about Mike ("the gunsmith") at CZUSA, he doesn't seem to know a lot of in depth knowledge about the CZ rifles. I've asked him a number of questions and he didn't seem to know.

If I worked at a gun company, especially as a gunsmith, I'd try to learn every detail I could about the products. If for no other reason, just out of great curiosity and interest.

Boy that seems to run counter to what I read on the CZ Forum mostly regarding pistols. He seems to know his stuff on the handguns. Quite a few satisfied customers who have had trigger jobs and some modifications to Single Action only.

hi guys,,,

thanx for the input.

yes it was mike (didnt get a last name)

i got the impression that he may have been following company policy with his answers.

he sounded like he was using his firm company policy voice...

i'm imagining they have had run-ins with some whom theyve tried to help with the sight adjustments but possiibly have had it blow up in their faces

eg. "you said these sights would work but they don't and we've already tried 3 different sets and now you're telling me i have to buy ANOTHER set"

i also got the feeling that he wasn't all that pleased with the sights or policy

like he welcomed another customer who is disgruntled with the sights and the means of adjusting them

of course these are only myy impressions...

i'm not pleased about the sights, i can tell you that

cause its either i buy them all or one by one till i get it right

could take a while

i find it hard to believe they didnt use adjustable sights myself

but i KNEW someone around here would give me the math on it

:D

i'll keep you all posted

thanx again

m
