Somehow we got on the topic of home defense while having dinner. Seems one evening they heard an odd noise outside their house, so the 16yo daughter grabbed the only gun they have...a Mossberg Plinkster. She prided herself on loading it quickly and "having it ready", but went on to say it has a trigger lock on it.:scrutiny:

I basically told her it was useless like that and a bat would be more effective. "It's alright, made me feel better". Hmm.

So the mom wants to learn firearms safety as her husband is away at work most of the week and has to stay overnight, leaving her and a house full of kids to themselves.

I tell ya. That makes two friends now that want me to teach them, as I'm the 'firearms guy'.

Who is the gun locked against? Small children? Mental incompetents? Or simply because someone told them that it was the responsible thing to do?

Depending on the kind of "trigger lock" you should let them know that it's MORE dangerous. I've seen several guns that could still be fired with a trigger lock installed.

Trigger locks are a violation of the four rules of gun safety, to wit... "Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target". It's not your finger, but it's still something messing with the trigger.

As for the "feel safer" comment, you shouldn't let that kind of idiocy stand. It doesn't do anybody any good.

What is a trigger lock?????? A very dangerous thing on a SD gun.

We got on the subject of HD at work one day. Both owners of this small company were very proud and quick at add that they have HD guns in the house. One has a pistol in the top of the closet, the other a shottie....................in the attic. Neither are loaded and the shells are nowhere near the guns. DOOHH To top that off, the felt somewhat confident they could get the guns loaded fast enough if needed. We talked about that and since then one calls me paranoid and the other is thinking about a CHL.
That lady that got shot for answering her door in North Richland Hills TX? That happened 1 mile from the one that called me paranoid. I thing he is changing his tone too.
