Gentlemen,
Just curious what would be involved in converting a Glock 22 to shoot 9mm(essentially making a G17). Would an aftermarket barrel be as accurate and reliable? Is it a good idea?
Thanks
Ss

Put a 9mm barrel in it and 9mm magazines.

For target work I would use an aftermarket barrel, but for carry use the factory Glock barrel is proven time and again to be the solution for acceptable accuracy with flawless function. I've seen lots of aftermarket barrels, some work great and some don't. I wouldn't trust one for quite some time.

Thanks for the help. I checked out Glockmeisters page, and he does not recommend putting a factory barrel in a G22. Could you explain why perhaps?, and make a recommendation to fix the problem? If I had to guess, I'd say that the extractor is the culprit here. Are you confident that the 22 could be made to function in all intents and purposes as a G17?
Thanks
Much

Hmmm, sounds as if there is something that I am not aware of here putting a G17 barrel in a G22. I was under the impression that you could drop a G17 barrel in a G22, swap mags and go but I haven't done it.

What I was trying to say in my previous post was to keep the G22 barrel in it for carry, I guess that didn't come across much clearer than mud..

I am confident that you can make a G22 function as a 9mm, my friend has done it with a G22 and a longslide competition version 40, what is that a 34 or a 35? One of his barrels is a KKM and the other is a Bar-Sto, of this I am positive.

HighVelocity, can you enlighten me on why the G17 barrel won't work? I don't have a G17 to do any comparisons.

Barrel diameters of the G17 and G22 barrels are probably not the same. (I've not compared those two models, personally.) Which means the 17 barrel would slop around inside the slide of a 22.

The only gunmaker that I personally know of that makes an interchangeable 9mm and .40 barrel is Tanfoglio, for the EAA Witness line. All of the rest I've encountered require a conversion barrel or new top end.

And, if the the Glock barrels are like most 9mm and .40 guns, the headspace will be wrong and the extractor probably won't work right. Conversion barrels are generally modified so that the extractor/headspace problems are resolved. With the EAA guns, you don't even have to change the mags.

Herr Smith: Per Walt, the muzzle hole in the slide of a G22 is larger than the o.d. of the G17 barrel, making for "rattling around."

Lonewolf Distributors sells 9mm conversion barrels for G22s. With the use of G17 mags, they work fine (at least in my experience.) Didn't change ejector or extractor.

I have a Lone Wolf 9MM Conversion Barrel for my Glock 32/23/19. It is very accurate and reliable. KKM .40S&W barrel also is very nice.

"Barrel diameters of the G17 and G22 barrels are probably not the same."

CORRECT!!

I have a StormLake 9mm conversion barrel in a G23. Together with 9mm magazines it runs very well. I did not need to change the trigger housing with the ejector, nor the extractor or it's plunger. I have over 99% reliability with it now and the reliability issues are mainly due to weaker reloads and changing springs. The barrel is at least as accurate as the factory barrels.

I got my barrel on sale for $99 at Topglock.com.

You should realize that this conversion is often trouble free but that in some cases there are extraction problems. In other words, it's fine for the range but not such a good idea for self-defense.
