I'm going to be receiving a standard AK 47 stock for Christmas this year (from my lovely wife who lets me pick out my gifts) and I went with a cheap stock to save money and because if I screw it up I'm not out too much.

My questions are pretty self explanatory in the second picture, but basically, I'd like to try to shave off the outer part of the sides of the stock to match my slant-cut receiver.

1) Has anyone done this or seen it done? Or for those with wood working experience, is it workable?

2) Will the loss of material on the stock displace the groove for the tang and will it be a problem to either extend the groove or just drill the screw on top of the new stock?

3) I'm not looking for an easier way out, but would it just be better to fix the stock as is and just try to fill the gap?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I have a MAK 90 so i'll try to give you some realistic advice. First, that stock looks foreign, so it wouldn't be legal to put it on a MAK that came with a thumbhole stock because of 922r regulations. You need to replace 5 foreign parts with U.S. made parts. Most get a Tapco trigger group (3 parts) and add U.S. made buttstock, forearm, and pistol grip (2 parts).

It is possible to carve the tang of that stock to fit into a slant cut receiver but the final outcome wouldn't be worth the effort. Just go to Ironwood Designs and buy a new U.S. stock built for slant cut MAKs. The wood is unfinished so you have to stain and seal it but it will be a perfect fit.

I hadn't mentioned the other parts I was getting as well, I've already got a galil style handguard mounted and will also be receiving the G2 trigger group and tapco pistol grip. So my 922 compliance will be met.

Unfortunately, money is somewhat of an issue (limited hobby funds anyway) and I can't afford the Ironwood Designs stock at this time. I don't mind working with my hands so I'm going to at least try to mod this new stock to fit.

I'd just like to get confirmation on if my thinking is correct or if I need to tweek my idea a bit.

You can meet 922r requirements without using USA wood. It just makes it easier if you use USA wood. (Or USA plastic)

I replaced the trigger (3 parts), the op rod (1 part) and the grip (1 part) with USA parts for a total of 5 USA parts. The MAK 90 has no muzzle device so it does not need 6 USA parts.

I would cut it to match. If I buggered it up, it's a cheap replacement part. Plenty of cheap foreign stocks available.

The cutting diagram you have illustrates a method that will not work. I have converted a VEPR with a slant receiver and you really need a stock designed to go into the slant receiver. You are going to have to take wood off the front where it mounts into the receiver, and then whittle down all sides, then cut a longer tang groove or cut the tang, then if you are lucky enough to make it work OK the finished product will be about 8.5" inches long and look like hell.

Why not put in the wood stock, fill the gap with plastic wood or epoxy, and then paint the stock black to match your Tapco Galil style front hand guard.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm really itching to start work on it, but I will not be too hasty and take my time with the work.

Thanks.

Wally, I had considered that, but for some reason, I really like the look of an all black rifle with a normal wood butt stock. I'll post pics after I get it all done. This will be my first stock refinishing job ever. If possible, I'll try to do some pyrography art on the stock as well, we'll see.
