I've always had an eye for the Xd's, don't have one because well, they don't make it in .45.

Well, the american rifleman came today and look what was plastered all over it--ads for the new XD in .45GAP. Dang.

*feels wallet*

But GAP is supposed to be = .45 auto.

40s&w != 45 auto

So how is 40S&W=GAP?

You'll have a lot more ammo choices in the 40, at least until more manufacturers load for the GAP. Still, a 40's hole is smaller than a 45's!

maybe initially, but what are their equivalent diamaters after expansion? I'll bet there is n't much different.

no, not much at all. .45GAP is a +P cartridge that puts out as much energy as a standard pressure .45acp. 40S&W is a +P cartridge that puts out as much energy as the .45acp. In terms of expansion and penetration, a 185gr 45gap and a 180gr .40 are essentially identical, about .65" expanded with almost 13-14" of penetration through 4 layer denim clothed gelatin. The heavier 200 grain .45 gap i wouldn't consider due to poor expansion in clothed gelatin (ammolab). All things being equal, i'd rather have a couple more shots and less expensive practice ammo.

.45 acp+P trumps both of them. In the same weight the .45 acp is a full 100fps faster. You can also get deep penetrating 230gr bullets to a velocity where they will expand properly.
