My wife and I finally got around to watching...all 3-1/2 hours of...the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers this weekend. (I wish I could shoot a rifle as well as those elves shoot their bows.) There was a pretty good self defense line by a female character.

In it, one of the lead characters (Eowyn -- played by Miranda Otto according to the movie's website), who is the niece of a King, is handling her sword. One of the lead male characters walks up and admiringly says something like "You have some skill with a blade".

To which she replies (paraphrased) "The women of this kingdom learned long ago that you do not have to carry a sword to die from one".

Good on her!

Yep. In the original books Eowyn actually says that in The Return of the King. Peter Jackson keeps moving things around. And he annoyed me by turning Faramir into an overstuffed self-important prig when he's one of my favorite characters from the books. Still, they're really good movies based on even better books.

Yeah, some of the changes seem to serve no purpose but to anger people who have read the books. Like when Aragorn falls off the cliff. What was the point? Faramir's character was made out to be a jerk.

Overall they are well done, though.

I believe the proper Eowyn quote is:

"Women of this country learned long ago that those without swords may still die upon them. I fear neither death nor pain. "
