My wife and I finally got around to watching...all 3-1/2 hours of...the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers this weekend. (I wish I could shoot a rifle as well as those elves shoot their bows.) There was a pretty good self defense line by a female character.
In it, one of the lead characters (Eowyn -- played by Miranda Otto according to the movie's website), who is the niece of a King, is handling her sword. One of the lead male characters walks up and admiringly says something like "You have some skill with a blade".
To which she replies (paraphrased) "The women of this kingdom learned long ago that you do not have to carry a sword to die from one".
Good on her!
