Attn. Coon Hunters / Houndsmen

I am doing research for a story (possible documentary) about the relationship between Coon Hunters and their dogs when I came across THR. I am asking for your help and /or advice.

Do you know any experienced Coon Hunters or Houndsmen out there that would be willing to share their knowledge and life long experiences with me? Someone who is passionate about their Coon Hounds and Coon Hunting and have strong opinions about all topics related to this sport. In other words, Storytellers / Characters (with all due respect) wanted.

Even though I have limited experience in what all of you Coon hunters / Houndsmen do, I am fascinated by the connection between Coon Hunters and their dogs.

Thank you in Advance for your help or advice.

Being a houndsman for most of my life, I can tell you that houndsmen are the most dedicated hunters you will come across. I ran bear and lion out here in the west, not much else for 20 years or so. PM me if you want.

I've never done any coon hunting on purpose. Although my mutts have trashed out and caught a coon or two. The majority of my hound hunting is on lion and bear. I also run Jagdterriers on hogs. I do know some seriously dedicated hounds men just not dedicated coon hunters.

The dogs I've owned and loved over the years would have no chance of being considered coon dogs, or top notch hounds for chasing anything. (for that matter)

My brother has had some really good ones over the years. I remember when 'Babe' his little walker was in her last couple weeks, he'd be up most of the night putting hot water bottles in her box to keep her warm, sitting by her side for hours in thirty degree weather, and not really wanting to talk.

There is certainly some connection to a man and his hound beyond what I've personally experienced, but have witnessed.

I think you will find this with most any hunter that hunts any species primarily with a dog. Bird dog owners, duck dog owners, houndsmen that use dogs for bear, cats and yotes.....all have a unique connection with their dogs, if they and their dogs are any good at what they hunt at all. No different than those that have sled dogs, search and rescue dogs or cops with K-9s. Without that connection, shared knowledge and bond of trust, it's just another dog.

Thank you, Art Eatman for the recommendation to read Bugle Ann, I will purchase. Moreover, thank you for responses so far.
