Coonan Arms. .357 Mag Pistol may be coming back

That's neat and all, but I never saw the point of rimmed cartridges in an auto-loader.

Why not get a 9x23? Ammo seems to be about as available as .357mag now. :D

I saw a guy use one at an IDPA match... LOUD LOUD LOUD, but cool. The shooter was no slouch either.

I've always wanted one since seeing one in a case a loooong while back. How well did the originals function? Probably doesn't matter, I have the feeling that if they ever make it to market they'll be priced well out of my range anyway.

Sweet. I shot one that belongs to a relative. That thing had some stout springs in it. Every round into the magazine was like the last round in a Glock magazine. Pretty easy to shoot, though it could have used a flash supressor.

He used it for bowling pin matches; apparently it boots pins off the table with some authority.

Maybe they could also make it in 7.62x25, a round a lot of folks claim to want in a "modern" auto-loader, but is too lon for any of the current production frames.

Personally, I'm only interested in the 7.62x25 because the surplus ammo is still relatively cheap and the TT-33 is a hoot to shoot and easy to clean the corrosive gunk out of.

You know, its sad when the gun world is focused totally on shooting people, and not enjoying hunting game like our fore-fathers.

the obvious and ONLY reason for ANYONE <extreme generalization alert!> to own a Coonan 357, is its a legal deer caliber.

Thats all I can come up with anyhow.

With the advent of the .357 Sig, why do we need a .357 Mag. auto?

.357 Magnum can be loaded with a wide variety of bullet weights (up to 200 grains) that are impossible for the .357 Sig.

One thing that hasn't changed since the fore-fathers is that nobody need justify buying a firearm, even an odd one.

By all appearances the Coonan pistol(s?) are set to make a comeback in 2010. I for one am excited. This is the one pistol I truely regret selling. Hopefully it will be priced so us regular folks can afford one! Can't wait to show up at the range with my 625's and one of these. Revolvers shooting auto cartridges and an auto shooting revolver cartridges

Not to sound off but why didn't any of the other manufactuers pickup the design or at least the concept of a 1911 that could shoot .357 magnum. Does Coonan hold some patent. copyright, trademark, or some other that keeps folks from making it or was it just too much of a manufacturing restock that wouldn't be worht the profit when the manufacturer was already cranking out profitable 1911 .45 ACPs. I've met a couple old hands that have cut their own 1911 receivers from 4140 steel billet. Would they face a lawsuit from Coonan if they cobbled together their own .357 Magnum 1911s, just a curiosity.

If Coonan would setup a pre-order setup I'm sure a few hundred folks would prepay for their guns(in whole or part) so long as they weren't too far north of $700. I own two Glock 20s and a Glock 29 and love the 10mm but I've always wanted a realisitic .357 Magnum in auto(Desert Eagles are too much gun for too little reward in my opinion for what it's not worth).

Well not one person in this thread has posted anything about shooting people. And some of us haven't ever gone out hunting (yet) but still enjoy shooting and owning whatever firearms they please.

If I get one it will be a working gun. Can't wait to sound off on the yearly qualification firing line with one of these! The three yard line "contact" distance shots ought to be interesting

If they remake these pistols I hope the materials are better this time. The one I had the opportunity to handle and fire some years back showed signs of stress from the exterme pressure and recoil. It shot ok but it was a rattletrap currently it is a nonworking pistol. Shoot one heck yes, trust one heck no, buy one probably... not... rather have a 10mm IMHO.

I had 2 of them at one time and wish I had them back. I have sold a few that I really regret selling and these 2 are a couple of them..

I have no interest in ever going hunting.

Never have.

-and-

Probably never will.

However I love to hunt paper and steel targets -- is that good enough for you?

I know this comment is a bit old but it deserves a comment.
Im not focused on shooting or killing people,im focused on protecting my life.
And our forefathers added the 2nd as they knew that hunting wasn't all that a gun is supposed to be used for. They had to protect themselves from bears, wolves, and then put food on the table. And protecting our country and freedom, thats what guns are for.

On topic tho,the .357mag is known to be the best one shot stopper even over the .45.At least thats what i recall reading, putting that in a 1911 is a good way to reduce recoil with weight and still give more stopping power.
If its reliable they should do well.

1911 pattern + .357 Magnum = dream gun. 'Nuff said.

I was hyped about the Coonan back in the 80's.

There was also the sadly discontinued LAR Grizzly that did .357 Magnum, .45 Winchester Magnum, 10mm, and .44 Magnum among others.

Yes it is the 125 gr loading. Seems that the 9x23 and the less appealing (to me anyway) 357 sig duplicate it. Putting a rim on an auto pistol caliber is inviting trouble. I'd rather have a 9x23 and mine's on the way. The only plus is ammo variety. There are tons more loads to choose from, rather than the 4 available in 9x23 and the dozen or so in 357 sig. BTW, the 9x23 can be easily converted to 38 super or 9x19. Just one more plus in it's favor. But I'm not going to say that there isn't a need for it. If there is a market, there is a need.

The 9x23 and .357 SIG duplicate the watered down, half-fast, LEO version of the .357 Magnum, (and require the Magnum to be fired in a vented barrel to do it where they have the benefit of a closed breech); but are nothing close to the actual, full-power, loaded as God and Phil Sharpe intended .357 Magnum with a 125gr bullet at 1700+ fps (still with a vented barrel).
I'd love to have a Coonan if they just would make a long-slide version. If Buffalo Bore's 180gr .357 Magnum will reach 1450 fps in a 6" revolver barrel, it might just produce 1600 fps from a 7" Coonan...and that's .357 Maximum power.
