Long Beach police shoot Los Angeles police officer

By THOMAS WATKINS, Associated Press WriterThu Jul 31, 12:59 AM ET

Long Beach police shot and wounded an armed and off-duty Los Angeles police officer early Wednesday after he allegedly ignored orders to drop his gun, authorities said.

Officer Jason Geggie was shot after Long Beach officers responded to a call about a person brandishing a gun while walking down the street, Long Beach police said.

Long Beach police Sgt. Dina Zapalski said Geggie pointed a gun toward officers. The Long Beach officer who fired his weapon was placed on standard three-day administrative leave, she said.

Geggie, a Long Beach resident currently assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department's central traffic division, was in stable condition at a local hospital with wounds to his arm and torso, Long Beach police said.

The 26-year-old, who has been with the LAPD for a year and a half, was booked for investigation of two counts of exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner, including once in the presence of a police officer.

Both police departments were investigating the shooting.

Tell me again why only cops are trusted to carry guns in Kalifonia?

I'm thinking alcohol was somehow involved......

Ding, ding, ding!!!

LONG BEACH - Three investigations were under way today into the Long Beach police shooting of an off-duty LAPD officer wounded while allegedly brandishing a firearm and appearing to be drunk.

LAPD Officer Jason Fennick Geggie, 26, of Long Beach, faces two felonies: exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a police officer in a threatening manner, and exhibiting a firearm at any person in a threatening manner, according to Long Beach police.

Geggie was wounded in "the arm and torso area" about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Mira Mar Avenue and was hospitalized in stable condition, according to a Long Beach Police Department statement.

"When officers arrived, they located the armed suspect in the 200 block of Mira Mar Avenue, and when they contacted the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred," the statement said.

He had refused to drop the weapon, which was recovered from the scene, a police spokeswoman said. The firearm was a shotgun, pellet gun, or rifle, according to published reports.

Geggie was booked at 6:39 a.m. Wednesday and later released on $25,000 bail, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's officials.

Sources in the Long Beach Police Department told the Press-Telegram that officers were called to the area of Termino Avenue and Fourth Street after residents reported seeing a man with a gun who looked drunk and was stumbling down the street.

Police sources also said his friends told investigators he had been drinking heavily when he wandered off before the shooting, the Press-Telegram reported.

Investigations of the officer-involved shooting are being conducted by the Long Beach Police Department, LAPD Internal Affairs, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

Geggie, a Belmont Heights resident, has been with the Los Angeles Police Department for 18 months and is assigned to the Central Traffic Division, according to LAPD Media Relations.

His father is a lieutenant in the LAPD's risk assessment department.

Don't you just LOVE the intellegence of reporters and all of the effort that they put into getting all of the facts correct the 1st time.

hey, seems that the legendary precision of journalists is the same here and there.

recently here , we heard about 22mm and 45mm pistols....

Dang.. if you find one to buy, let me know. I need one !

And I thought it was funny when I saw a local cop pull over another cop from a few cities over for speeding!:banghead:

Yes and the funny thing is , I am not convinced that it wasn't a pistol. The press never gets it quite right.

1) It's spelled California.
2) Ordinary citizens are allowed to carry concealed in California if permits are granted by county or city law enforcement. They are granted more often than you may think.
3) No permit is needed to carry concealed if you are fishing, hunting, or camping in California.
4) Open carry is permitted in certain jurisdictions.
5) It is popular to deride and damn CA, but note that retiring Californians are very attracted to Colorado.

He could have been riding a horse down the middle of the street while wearing a ballroom gown and the SoCal press would overlook everything except the part about the firearm...which maybe wasn't a firearm at all (pellet gun?)

Not in Long Beach or LA they are not.

Counting the permits issued in the Fresno and Bakersfield areas doesn't really count as far as claiming CA is a "fair" issue state.

And regardless, it's still may issue which is wrong in just about every way imaginable.

No permit is needed to carry concealed if you are fishing, hunting, or camping in California.

That's a pretty bold statement. You leave out the parts where it VERY much depends on who owns the land and that California has NO peaceable journey provisions for a loaded firearm.

There's no way you can spin it in such a way that California appears to be a gun friendly state, and I'm not sure why you'd try.

Agreed Shung, a 45mm pistol would be very useful for dealing with those pesky muggers operating out of APCs.

What is it with the LAPD anyway? Or maybe LAPD just gets more publicity than other depts? I don't hear about this stuff happening out of Chicago or NY.

Or maybe I'm not paying enough attention. Hmph.

Not trying to spin anything, and never said it was. My point is that alot of folks are overly eager to speak poorly about the place, and they are often ill-informed. I was stationed in CA, and I really got miffed if I posted about an issue related to firearms, seeking help, and got 50 replies telling me to move. Also, you have to know exactly what comprises a problem before you can attempt to remedy it - most people simply choose to ignore and deride CA.

Now, as to the accuracy of my statements...you are right about LA. Several other jurisdictions are zero-percent issue as well. That's why I said "if permits are granted by county or city law enforcement." Not as good as statewide shall-issue, but better than states that ban CC entirely.

There are very large portions of California that the laws I spoke of regarding hunting, fishing, and camping are applicable and practicable. It's a big place...

First of all, Open carry is legal if you are in a county with a population of less than 200,000. There are actually quite a few. I'd say roughly a third of the counties have 70,000 or less. And second of all, you can get a ccw permit if you have "justifiable need" which is determined by someone in your county's police force, I don't know if it needs to be the chief. So people in Kern county would probably have an easier time getting one than people in Ventura county.

LEO's are people with problems too. Sorry he lost his gun rights.
