Cop shoots colleagues while cleaning gun

By Darryl Heeralal

Tuesday, January 11th 2005

A HOMICIDE detective shot two constables at the Police Administration Building in Port of Spain on Friday.

The shooting took place in the ground floor lobby of the building located at the corner of Edward and Sackville Streets around 6.45 p.m.

The officer said he was clearing his mini Uzi submachine gun when it accidentally went off shooting PC Dyer of the Guard and Emergency Branch and PC Henry of the Administration Branch.

Dyer was shot in the back and Henry in the right ankle.

Both were treated and the Port of Spain General Hospital and discharged.

According to initial reports, the officer failed to follow proper police procedure in clearing his weapon.

He was also not supposed to have cleared his weapon in the lobby of the building.

ASP Julie Carrington is investigating the matter and at the end of the enquiry it will be determined whether the officer will be charged with any criminal offence.

:uhoh: Oops!

They ought to learn which it was - cleaning or clearing, It sounds like it was clearing.Point in safe direction, mag out, clear chamber!! Trinidad has become a violent place recently that's why they need Uzi s .

Just how complicated is it to clean or clear a gun? :cuss:
I am amazed at how often these stories come up.

At least they are blaming the person rather than the gun.

Really?

The officer said he was clearing his mini Uzi submachine gun when it accidentally went off shooting PC Dyer of the Guard and Emergency Branch and PC Henry of the Administration Branch.

"I was just cleaning it and IT WENT OFF ALL BY ITSELF."

I think that an UZI fires from an open bolt so all he had to do was trip the bolt. an "open bolt" gun can only be considered "safe" with the bolt down and the magazine removed

To clear an open bolt weapon one just removes the magazine.

So he accidentally had it off safe and accidentally tripped the trigger while on his way to the mag release.

Goooooo team!

The scary part of this is that Bozo is a homicide detective! Imagine what he might do if he actually meant to use the Uzi!

It must be something about being a Homicide Detective...a good friend of mine (Homicide Detective) shot the candy machine in the break room....killed a snickers bar and got a well deserved vacation too I might add!

If I understand it correctly, fully auto UZI's fired from an open bolt for cooling reasons, just like the fully auto Thompsons. With the bolt back there would be no round chambered. When the trigger is pulled the bolt scoops a round from the top of the magazine, slaps it into the breech and fires it. The bolt blows back and if your finger is off of the trigger, it stays back; breech empty, hot gases escaping, bolt sticking out into nice cool air. So really, all you have to do is drop the magazine and the gun is clear.

Technically, you can clear a gun by simply pulling the trigger, but it does make a lot of noise and those annoying pieces of copper and lead tend to upset co-workers.

So he accidentally had it off safe and accidentally tripped the trigger while on his way to the mag release.

...while pointing it at his comrades.

proper police procedure? how about just unloading the damn thing, drop the clip, pull back the bolt, you're good to go..

On his way to the mag release?

The durn thing's nowhere near the trigger on an UZI! :banghead:

So was he "cleaning" it, or "clearing" it? There is a BIG difference.

I think "clearing"-because TWO rounds were fired. We've all read stories where a ND occurred because the idiot in question did not check the chamber. But "cleaning" WITH THE MAGAZINE STILL IN??? No police officer is that stupid, right?

Right? :uhoh:

The article says "clearing", BTW. Careless and neglegent, yes. But not necessarily a future Darwin winner.
