Copper Fouling

It is VERY disheartening to look into the barrel of a gun that has had 2 460gr HC (Corbon) 6 JSPs (Remington 300 gr) and 12 LeverEvolution (Hornady 325 gr) bullets (in its whole life!) and find 'rust'. I was panicking when I realized that it isn't rust it is copper fouling.

Ok, whew! But I have no idea of what to do. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, your my only hope!

Just look for any copper cleaner, I prefer ones without ammonia so I can let them sit in the barrel for awhile (usually an hour or two.) Then just run a couple patches down the bore until its squeaky clean. That's all there is to it. I usually use hoppes bore cleaner in between copper cleanings as it gets some copper out too, keeps the fouling down.

Hoppe's Benchrest #9 gives good results if you follow the directions.

Get some Boretechs "Eliminater" copper solvent and don't look back. It's non ammonia based and a surfectant, let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then run a jag down the barrel. If you still see any copper just repeat the process.

The very best copper cleaner out is KG-12 but Kroil oil given soak time will also loose the copper so it can be cleaned out. Use some JB's bore polish and kroil on a patch to scrub and clean anything remaining behind. Look like its a new marlin. Older rifles were not likely to copper.

I've used Hoppes Copper out....it didn't work even half as well as Wipe-Out foaming cleaner.

With the Hoppes I cleaned the barrel, then left the barrel wet with the Hoppes copper out for 8 hours...came back and had to repeat several times before most of the copper was gone...never was able to get it all out.

With the Wipe=Out, even on the most copper fouled guns, I used the accelorator, then shoot the Wipe-out in the barrel, let it sit for about 4 hours....swab it out and about as much of the copper is gone as it took me with 3 tries with the Hoppes. Use the Wipe-out a second time and your barrel is pretty much 100% copper free.

I use foaming bore cleaners as much as possible to avoid wear on the barrel. It does an OK job. For heavier copper fouling I use a bore mop soaked in any amonia based copper solvent followed by those textured pre cut patches. The texture seems to pull fouling work way better than a cloth patch.
