not here to offend anyone but the cops ive been pulled over by are pigs... im sure there are nice ones.. but this is what happened... i was making a right turn on a red light.. didnt stop... then i went to make a left turn and pullinto the far left lane.. thats when he turned his lights on.. i put my signal on a go to the right... understandable i did wrong...he gets me for both things.. then his buddy shows up... im a young guy 21...and ive seen cop episodes...so what i do is stick my hands out the window... just have them hanging on my door.. just being polite and making their job easier.. i mean they can see my hands.. you never know...someone can pull a gun and start shooting so i stuck them out.. anyways his buddy pulls up puts his hand on his gun and asks me "do you wnat to get shot? why do you have your hands ou tthe window?" and poiltely i replied..ive seen cops episodes just making your job easier/// you know where my hands are.. so then he leaves and and as he walks away tells me to put them on the steering wheel....now they are here to protect and serve the citizens.. not intimidate the **** out of them.... i wanted to say you guys can be a little politer.. i had my stuff ready to go and was just trying to make your job easier... i get intimidated by them...and ive never done anything wrong except maybe a couple traffic violations here and there.. this whole fiasco is going to cost me 397....but yea guys just trying to rid my frustration...

I was speeding well over the speed limit ( by around 40 ). He pulled me over and I was just being 100 % honest and said I didn't see the sign and admitted to speeding so he comes back with a 30 $ ticket and he put 15 kmh(canada) over the limit. :)

y locked? im sure there are nice cops out there but some.. just try to intimidate you.... and i ask why>? they are here to protect me.... and plus im harmless i look 12.... and clean record with my hands out the door.. i mean come on!!!!!!! no sudden moves or anything...

Police do seem to go condition red more with the younger set.

Next time you get pulled over, here's what you do. Turn on your interior light first, roll down the window slightly. Keep your hands ON THE WHEEL, not out the window. Follow directions and tell them where your paperwork is located and that you'll be searching for it in those spots. Don't try and explain anything or give excuses...they expect that.

Conversely, you have rights as well. You do NOT have to give consent to a search of your vehicle. If they ask you to get out of the vehicle, close the door behind you with the window rolled up. They can pat you down for weapons, that's it.

Others will chime in with more details.

PS...
they are here to protect me

No, they're not. Police are there to react, not protect. And looking 12 is not an asset, believe me.

Oh, man

It just sucks when you do something stupid and they catch you at it, doesn't it?

Politeness has saved me a ton of money from those stupid mistakes.

Yes sir. No sir, I did not. No, you're quite right. Absolutely, sir. Nope, you're right, I blew that, write it up. Why thank you, sir, that's very kind.

The most stark contrast I can recall was the evening when two of us (that's right, me and the guy in the lane beside me) got pulled over at the same time.

I had my papers out, got out, strolled over the the cop, and said, "sorry about that, officer, I hope I won't take too much of your time."

The other guy could be heard cursing and swearing as he pawed through his glove box for paperwork.

Officer looked at him, grinned, asked me what the hurry was. "Well, I'm picking up my wife at the university, and I'm a little late. Well, maybe more than a little, now."

He nodded, looked back at the cursing fellow, and said, "he can wait; I'll have you out of here in a minute."

And he wrote me up for "driving without due care" cuz I ran a "pink" light (borderline yellow/red).

As I got back in the car to drive off, it became clear the other driver was going to get a much more "interesting" ticket.

Cost me $50. I wonder what it cost the other guy.

hmmm... when i get pulled over im polite.. he actually asked me if i had any guns in the car and i said you can check.... is that bad? i mean im just being polite nothing to hide......i wasnt drunk either... simple mistakes..i mean come on... does every single person stop completely to make a right turn on red? its later at night no cars... but yea....grrrr.... thanks guys for the replies...

i dont know... i dont get pulled over alot.. i was being curteous....

As mentioned earlier, be polite. But also don't give more info than is asked. Yes sir, no sir. If you say "look if you want to", it sounds verbally confrontational, even if not intended that way. Don't help them with anything, hand placement especially, if they want anything besides natural hand locations/movements, they will tell you...

Tune Yer Radio

You know how it is when you tune a radio to almost the station you want, and there's all kinds of static and noise along with the music?

Your radio isn't broken, but it isn't tuned quite right, and you're getting junk from attempting to process a signal that doesn't match the tuning.

So, there you are, young guy, trying to be polite, not knowing exactly what this officer wants to hear. You are not sending the signal he's tuned for. The more "noise" he hears, the more effort he will exert to resolve things, and the more "pain" he will feel, and the more irritation he will experience.

Some of the guys here are either active or retired cops of one flavor or another.

They can help you with those little nuances of wording.

"Do you have any guns in the car?"
"No, sir, I do not."

An answer of "you can check" is going to stimulate the wrong sensors.

Learn how law enforcement guys are tuned. Transmit on that channel and you'll do better.

Of course, it really helps if you drive in such a way that they just never have anything for which they can pull you over in the first place.

Trust the force, Luke.

good point afrin... im young... havent been pulled over in years... i came here because you guys are cool... you guys helped me with my frist gun purchase.. i dont want to join another forum just to tell what happened to me....sorry i posted.. geez....

Relax, dude.

We all understand the frustration.

There are plenty of people here who will happily help you learn from this.

Just a hint, for the future y'know, when you're choosing the title of a thread like this, you're going to have more of that "tuned to the wrong channel" problem if you begin with "cops are pigs."

The people responding to you will probably find that just a little . . . provoking.

"Frustrated with police encounter" will engage more people and their answers will be more what you're hoping for.

Hang in there.

im 21 also, i think you did the right thing for sticking your hands out the window. that cop was just being an a-hole. lucky the only time i got pulled over was a nice cop. i didnt mind getting a ticket because he was nice and doing his job, he could ve done things a little quicker though. anyway, lesson learned for me is not to speed on the feeder.

"cops are pigs in my oppinion"

...and people who use epithets in the titles of their threads are... ?

Just by way of information, if you want to look like an experienced felon to an officer making a traffic stop, roll down your window and stick your hands out to show the nice officer that you don't have a gun. Better yet, scream "I don't have a gun, don't shoot me, pigs!" That should make the officer feel much more comfortable and let him know that you mean him no harm.
