This is what I was trying to convey last week. It's a different world there. They regard anyone who carries a gun with apathy, as if they did something wrong. It is just passed along through the media from generation to generation,, so that their kids are programmed to dislike guns at an early age. It would be an impossible task to try and get them to understand the whole culture because they shut down immediately if you speak about guns.
When I went to court over an incident that was later dismissed, a cop arrested me for carrying my own gun, "that's how uninformed and biased they are". when they read the initial charges CPW4, how can you be charged with criminal possession of a weapon when you are licensed to have that weapon. They actually named each bullet and how many holsters bullets etc. that I had handed them when they came to my apartment. It sounded like I was Dillenger with 1 gun and every bullet separately, like 25 of these and 30 of those, even the holsters .
Of course they apologized and dropped all the charges and returned the guns, but not before I had to hire an attorney and go to court over a dozen times while they postponed the case due to no one wanting to proceed, "they knew they had made a big mistake, "lawsuit sized"
Once I got an intelligent judge who actually read the complaint, he said who's the idiot that filed charges on the defendant, to which the ADA remarked I haven't had time to review the case, that's when the judge lost it, he said "from memory", you arrested a man who had a permit for his gun that he was carrying for no reason? You are an idiot, this has gone on for over a year and a half and you aren't familiar with the case yet, where is the officer, to which the ADA had no answer, then he said, "case dismissed". He called me up to the bench and apologized for the entire mess.
I still had to go to 1 PP where a Captain had to interview me, when we left, my attorney and I, I could hear him screaming at the officer all the way to the elevator.
He didn't even remember one thing about what happened.
That's because he wasn't even there.
All this and more over breaking up a fight between my doorman and a cop in my building. By holding the doorman in an armlock, and my weapon showed from under my sweatshirt.
The next thing I had 10 cops pointing guns at me, even though I had my permit in my wallet which I kept telling them.
3 days after the meeting at 1 PP, everything was returned to my local precinct and they handed all my stuff back like nothing ever happened.
I was told that they dragged it out to see if I would sue the city, department, and officer. If I did I was told through my lawyer, I would never get my guns or license back. I assured them that I only wanted my guns back, so they waited to see if I would file.
Even if you win in court, you still have to go for a Captains review, and he can deny your license "just because". It's a hostile environment for those few who decided they would pursue their right to carry a gun in NYC.
And cops are looked upon as hero's if they can get a license revoked from a civilian. I remember the rookie who took the collar, the other cops made a big deal about it being his first gun collar, knowing it was a bad collar, they didn't want it.
That's what you are dealing with, a stacked deck. They asked me questions like why do you have a gun? Only cops have guns in this city.
The attorney remains a dear friend until this day, he said he never saw anything like this before, and he is a top Criminal Attorney who dumbfounded at the whole thing, just said keep quiet and I will have you out in a minute. And he did.
