Corn Cob Media - Where? Walmart? Petco?

Hi, Gents...

I know I'm not the only one who doesn't want to pay to ship a 50 pound bag of corncob media across the country, or to get gouged by Cabelas (or whomever).

I've seen several posts saying that ground corn cob (sometimes walnut) is available in pet stores, but when I asked my wife to pick some up, this stuff is nearly 1/4 in diameter, not the fine grind we use for tumbling brass.

What I need to know is actual product name and source - like "Kitty magic at Walmart" or "Hamsterfluff at Petco" so I can nail this stuff down in one trip... I'm out of town, gas isn't getting cheaper.....:banghead:

I'd be very grateful if one of you kind folks could give me specific info....

I use the corn cob stuff from Walmart,but I don,t load anything smaller than 30 Cal.it works just great for that an all my pistol brass and does a wonderful job,it is a little large for anything smaller. If you need some smaller cob that will work on cases as small as .17 try this in the 14/20 grind http://www.championsbrand.com/corn1420.html

I've heard many people use Zilla Ground English Walnut Shells from Petco. I plan on trying some but it looks a little large from the picture on their site. Hard to tell, though.

I use the 1/8" grind corn cob that I buy at the local feed store for $15.49 for a 40 pound bag. Just be sure you get the 1/8" grind, and not the 1/4" grind, or you'll just be buying a headache, as it sticks inside the cases and you'll have to pick it out.

Good stuff at Walmarts pet section..called "Kaytee Walnut Litter" for Birds. 8 lb. bag for less than $5.00. Just the right granular size ground walnut shells. Untreated of course and works well.

I've gotten the Kaytee walnut bird litter at Petsmart (local Walmart doesn't carry it). Locally it runs $18.99/25 pound bag. It works well.

Don't know where you live, but you might find a local supplier in the yellow pages under "abrasives" or "sandblasting supplies". Muuuuuch cheaper that way. My last purchase was a 50# bag for ~ $15. A little liquid car wax and you are good-to-go.

Harbor Freight walnut is very very small, like sand. Have run thousands of cases through it with Flitz for polishing and it works great. Walnut there is $25 for 25 pounds I think. Cheaper if you go on their website and get the coupons mailed to your door. Every now and again I get one for 15% off an item. Got their brand tumbler also. No problems so far, and for $35 with media not a bad deal.

I bought the petco zilla walnut lizard litter. It is the right size for tumbling. I had never tried walnut, been using corncob for years. I tumbled some not-too-dirty 40's, it didn't seem to do anything. So I charged the media with some flitz. A little brighter than before, but nothing like the shine I get with corncob. If all you want is clean, then the walnut works fine.

Not so fast there Sunray! Since I have been using Nu Finish and cut up dryer sheet with every batch of brass my media has lasted longer, my brass is cleaner, and it doesn't tarnish. By the way I only use the car wax in my 50/50 corn/walnut tumbler that I use to do my in ital clean. I have a second tumbler setup with only walnut and a cut up dryer sheet for cleaning off case lube only. Personally I thought the Nu Finish and dryer sheet was two of the best pieces of advice I got off this forum, the other being the custom case lube using one part lanolin to four parts 99% isopropyl alcohol. If you have tried Nu Finish and haven't liked it please tell us why.

I get mine from Hi-tech ammo. $7/10 pounds.. usually I order 20 or 30 pounds. A 50 pound sack while less expensive will cost you shipping depending on where from then you also need worry about where to store it.

This lasts me about a year to year and a half.
