I helped a friend mount a scope on his Grandad's Springfield "Clickety Clack" 87A. I was surprised when I goggled it that there was not a real definitive answer except using the old side mount weavers. Here are the parts you need for top mounting a 1" scope.

2x Weaver 48012's @ $4 each
1 Set of Weaver Style Rings of the Correct Height.
You're 1" Scope.

It cost me $30 to have a gunsmith drill, tap (4 holes total) & mount the scope. He also had to shim a bit. I am just putting this out for easy info. Here is how it turned out. 20201003_133840.jpg 20201003_133850.jpg

You could have got a modern side mount for a 1" scope that would have used the 2 factory holes instead of drilling 4 more. Someone already drilled it for the 4 hole 3/4" Weaver mount. Looks ok but less holes are better.

That’s one fine example of an old 87! I’ve had a few through the years. The oldest one I had was a model 6.
I loved the way they operated- kinda like a dot matrix printer!:) Enjoy!

^^^^^^Yah!, I'll second that! The left side of the receiver does have several holes already done, most likely with the idea of an optic base use at some point in time. If that's now been done the "correct way", I gotta wonder why all those holes are present on the left side of the receiver, and who put those there???
