Has anyone here ever used Breakfree CLP to clean Cosmoline off of a surplus rifle? What did you think of how well it worked?

Tonight I rubbed a cloth with a little bit of Breakfree on it, on the receiver of a surplus Mosan Nagant M44. The cosmo came off like melted butter, no heat, no hot water, no mineral spirits, no Easy-Off oven Cleaner, no Gun Scrubber, no Brake Cleaner, no hoppes, no Kerosine - nothing except Breakfree CLP and a plain cloth cleaning patch and a few easy rubs!

I had already taken over an hour just to clean the disassembled bolt in boiling hot water and Dawn dishwashing detergent. Then oiled it lightly with Breakfree; then I got the idea to see what Breakfree would do to straight Cosomoline that was still on the uncleaned receiver. It was like that vodoo that you do! The cosmo came off very easy and fast. I may try this with a spritzer bottle of Breakfree on the barrel, sight, receiver, cleaning rod, and magazine. I'll spray it down first, give it a minute or two, then rub clean with a cloth. I'll let you know if it was a success, but probably not until next weekend.

I have some before and after pictures of the bolt posted in my blog in two seperate posts from today. The before is at: http://ballseyesboomers.blogspot.com/2007/03/find-inthe-basement.html, at: and the after is at: http://ballseyesboomers.blogspot.com/2007/03/mosan-nagant-bolt.html

By the way, if this is a repeat of someone else's discovery about cosmo and Breakfree, sorry but I tired searching for something just like this, but cosmo and breakfree come up to many times.

All the best,

I have found that Breakfree (which is the only thing I use to clean and lube all of my guns), does not fully remove cosmoline. There always seems to be some residue left on the parts, or in nooks or crannies.

I take entire bolt assemblies, trigger groups, etc and just throw them into a pot of boiling water on the stove for 15 minutes and boil all the cosmo out, then oil with breakfree. Works great.

Thanks. I was thinking of using the oven; but that means I have to be home when the wife is at work!:)

All the best,

A less expensive method that works for me is Mineral Spirits. Or Acetone. I think Breakfree is a great prodect a We always have some around the house. Mil-Surp cleaning got much easier for me after I bought a set of dental picks. Any way you approach it it is a chore. Essex

I have used the Mineral Spirits method before, along with Easy off Oven Cleaner, and Gun Scrubber all with lots of elbow grease. The Breakfree sure seemed to make it come off easier, but yes it would probably be more expensive, at least than Mineral Spirits.

What is Eezox? I have never heard of it before.

Thanks,
GB

The easiest method I've found for removing cosmolene is just to haul the parts to the nearest coin-op car wash and blast it off. It only takes a few minutes and no scrubbing and wiping. Oil it up as soon as you get home and you're good to go.

Yeah I could just imagine trying that here on Long Island, especially in my district, the home of Carolyn 'Anti-Gun' McCarthy.
