I won a 2/3rds box ( 33 rounds ) of older .38 S&W...on Gun Broker...for $11.00.

Seller then writes me saying "$20.00" for Shipping, along with Auction price of $11.00...is "$31.00" Grand Total...Texas to Southern Nevada.

I politely asked e-mail reply, him if that was right, and he got pretty uncivil.

Any opinions as for what a fair shipping price should be?

I'd thought a fair price would be about five bucks...

should not be that much. Sounds like he thought he would get more from the auction and is trying to make up for it on shipping. However if it was listed in the auction then its your fault you didn't read that before you bid.

It's going to be more than 5 but should be way less than 20. You can't ship USPS so find the weight and you can look it up on the UPS or FedEx site.

I was quoted $14 to ship 7 boxes of .40...you guys are getting ripped somewhere. Also, never buy mailer boxes at those UPS stores...that's their biggest money makes!

The seller's Auction desription said nothing about shipping costs.

Yes ( Lol, ) I should have taken that as a cue to ask in advance.

Seller's uncivil reply said it'd be "$20.00 Shipping" even if only 'one' Round...because he does things "LEGALLY"...

Yeeeeeeeesh...

Prior Auctions I've won for older Boxes of Ammo, other sellers, everyone has been very cool, very reasonable, no BS, no surprise shipping costs even when none were stated in description...so...I was not used to having to ask in advance..!

So can you now refuse it since there was no shipping price listed on the auction and the seller is obviously ripping you off?

Also, bad rating feedback on the seller - very bad...

Dang thing is that as long as a shipper describes it as "shipping & handling" by law he can do whatever he wants on the "handling" part of it, and they are not required to break down the two parts.

If he only listed it as "shipping" and socked you for actual cost PLUS, you could go after him for false advertising, etc.

It's how TV products make so much money..."for just 19.95 (plus $8.95 S&H), you can have..."

Auction listing said nothing about costs for Shipping, or, Handling.

But yes, the famous 'Handling' Charge clause...IS the LuLu sometimes!!!

They should have those flat rate envelopes at FedEx and UPS. $20 is on the high side... very high side.

I've sent boxes upwards of 18x18x18 for under $20 and a case of 7.62x39 for as little as $14.

Sounds like he wants to make his profit on the shipping. It's happened to me alot. Paid $10 shipping and the item arrives and will have a shipping price of $2.23 or something. Has happened allloot.

Not sure you can use a flat rate envelope for special items. Loaded ammuntion needs to be marked Other Regulated Material (ORM-D). I don't think there is a cost for this, but only some UPS places may take an ORM-D package from Joe Blow.

But $20 still seems out of line.

Live and learn pal.

Oh yeah...

Just curious what others thought or could add.

One seller awhile back, claimed his State ( New York, ) had special 'Laws', and so he had to charge $15.00 a-box ( for .38 Special ) for shipping...

Just checked my order reciept. Two weeks ago I received my order for 1000 rounds of 9mm. The shipping was $15.00
Now mind you that was through an ammo supplier using UPS ground. That being said I recieved my order from them in two days.

He may be charging you more to ship it as ORM-D hazmat?

I am sure he is probably charging more to ship it ORM-D. Even though there is NO additional cost to him, so the extra he is charging is 100% profit.

i shipped one box of 6.5 carcano & it cost me $18.50. the buyer had a rural address & it added an additional fee that i hadn't expected. when i used the calculator on ups's website to give the buyer a quote the rural fee didn't show up so i ate the cost.
