Cost of shipping one Box of Ammo?

Well, if you consider the actual freight was probably $8 or $9, you could add $4 for the "On Call" pick-up fee if he doesn't have a daily pick-up, plus $5 for "Adult Signature". It could easily add up to $18. UPS also requires the box be labeled ORM-D if it contains ammunition...but I don't know if it costs more for that.

I've never been able to ship anything via UPS Ground for less than $8 or $9.

I don't think you need adult signature....the seller is just supposed to determine if you are an adult. It is not hazmat. Keep in mind the seller Must go to an official shipping office, not a Kinkos or UPS Store.

In my internet searches for ammo on GB, I only look at 2 or more boxes to amortized the shipping cost.

I wouldn't count on it in this case(your dealer sounds like an a__), but I bought a mag off Gunbroker and out of what I sent for shipping, the seller wrapped dollar bills around the mag and boxed it up to refund the excess...was a pleasant surprise.

It would be interesting to see the link to the auction...to avoid in the future. :)

I emailed a Gunbroker seller after a purchase on his "shipping & handling fee". His ad had said "actual shipping cost".

He explained he rounded off (upward) the postage and added handling.

I sent him the actual shipping cost, $4.80 for a flat rate envelope (2 short Glock mags). He fumed in a return email after he got it, but sent them.

The floor price for UPS or Fedex is usually in the $8-9 dollar range for lower 48 states. Actual shipping cost is exactly that. If shipping and handling, technically you need a cardboard box with a min pound ratting, you can not use a $.97 walmart box. I sell on gunbroker and just post a fixed shipping price. Its usually more than actual shipping by a few dollars (not always), its known upfront. Its easiest that way, reguarless if its free shipping or overpriced shipping the buyer knows exactly what to bid for total cost and should not matter. Actual Shipping cost should be actual shipping cost though. Flat rate envelopes are not acceptable for ammo shipments. I always avoid auctions if shipping cost is unknown. I'm sure there are a lot of problems on handgun sales, even if it says "actual shipping" I don't think people realize it has to go UPS or FedEx overnight and may cost $40 or more.

Of course businesses put markup on shipping costs.

Shipping 20lbs to California from Upper Michigan is around $20. I put markup on that to cover the box, tape, label, ink, and my time for packing the order up. The markup for the item I sell is the profit for that item. If I am charged something I mark it up. That's how businesses make money.

tell him you will need some some extra time to come up with the additional money for the unexpectedly high shipping charge. :barf:
suggest that meanwhile he store it where the sun don't shine.:rolleyes:

Darn it...I realize now, that I should have replied - "Okay...$20.00 Shipping for 33 rounds of .38...and, please allow ohhhhh, $20.50, SHIPPING CHARGES, for me to mail my payment to you..."

Lol...

please link the add

it is possible he left an 'out' as far as how he wrote the add.

Unfortunately, he probably is as clever as he is unscrupulous. This means, however, that when YOU chose to bid, you agreed to all his terms. The fact that you are being overcharged is irrelevant. It is your fault for not asking shipping and handling charges. I believe you are morally and legally obliged to fufill the bargin you AGREED TO even if you agreed to it in ignorance.

Count the exceesive charge as 'tuition for a life lesson'
