If it's all-cotton and it fits, there's no reason it wouldn't work. Lube it up and load. I've seen several different weaves sold as "cleaning patches" though.
I go to wal mart and buy a couple of yds of diaper flanel to cut and use for cleaning patches, never thought about useing them for shooting patches might not be tight enough weave material.
I've done it with only mediocre success. The cotton cleaning patches usually won't remain intact in any of my ragmouth rifles. They may perform better from a smooth bore where they have a little less hostile environment during the trip to the muzzle, but I have always had to use heavier material if I was interested in any measure of acceptable accuracy.
