Country of origin for 1911's

I recently bought a Ruger pistol, because Ruger is "100%" Made in the USA. I have no reason not to believe them. Springfiled says Springfield Amory USA on the side of their firearms. But xD's made in croatia?? I've shot the Springfields and was very impressed. Love the 1911 but I'm not sure which way to go. I'm not bent on buying something made in the US, but a lot of misleading info out there. Is Colt made in the US or Cananda? Springfields in croatia or is that the xD line only? S&W 1911 made in US? And of course the customs Kimber, Wesson's and such. Thanks.

Colt is made in the USA!

I do believe that Smith and Kimber are both US made as well.

Springfield's frame and I believe slide are made in Brazil.

Your choice, I buy American made...Because I want to, you decision.

And if you really want a 1911, then but a Colt!

Springfields start with frames/slides forged by IMBEL in Brazil.
some are built in the US, some are done in Brazil.

Dan Wesson's are US made, which (IMO) is the best bang for the buck.

get a used colt and go from there if you want a US 1911. pretty hard to go wrong unless a dremel has been taken to the gun (feed ramps etc).

The major US made brands are AutoOrdnance (Kahr), Les Baer, Ed Brown, Colt, Kimber, Nighthawk, ParaUSA, SigSauer (actually made in New Hampshire), Smith & Wesson, STI, Dan Wesson, and Wilson. No doubt there are others I missed. I didn't forget Springfield. They are all made in Brazil and some are assembled here in the US.

XDs are simply HS2000s with the SA logo and a higher price tag. I dont know about the XDm.

Rock Island Armory is Philippines I think. I have an older colt and a springfield that was made at the imbel plant in brazil. I like to buy American as well- but sometimes I just can't afford it.

This comes straight from Deb/Vicky at Springfield... if > 50% of the work is done on one of their pistols in Brazil, then somewhere on that pistol it will be marked "Brazil". Should > 50% be done in Geneseo, IL, then it does not require a "Brazil" marking.

To blur the lines a little more, would the STI Spartan be American or an import?

I do like the Colt series 70. It's inexpensive, compared to some, and made in the USA. Thanks for the input...

STI Spartan is manufactured and assembled in the Phillipines.

According to errornet buzz, they will soon be offering a 9mm. I can't wait.

I agree with the above comments that its personal preference whether to buy american or not.

however "springfield armory" has always bothered me. they got (or purhcased/used whatever) the rights to that name; heck some people even think they are a real government armory. but they import almost their entire product line.

ive even had people comparing an XD to a Glock say they prefer to buy american...
