Picked up two new Smiths last week, and looking for a little info.

1st, I found an very good condition 4" 581 with original grips, serial number AEN6***. I know this is the fixed sight variant of the 586, and supposedly somewhat tough to find. Can someone give me a year of manufacture and an approximate value.

2nd, I picked up a shooter grade model 2 1/2" 19-3 serial number 1K89***. It also had the original grips, though I have replaced them. The blue on this one is absolutely beautiful, except for 3 small spots that had some pitting and were touched up with cold blue. This one may just have to go off for a reblue, since other than those few flaws, the gun is perfect. I would also like to find the year of manufacture for this one.

Thanks in advance.

According to the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson(2nd ed.):"

very good condition 4" 581 with original grips, serial number AEN6***.

Your 581 should have been made sometime between Jan-Nov 1984; in Very Good condition, value is $250(but I'd gladly pay up to $350 myself).

shooter grade model 2 1/2" 19-3 serial number 1K89***.

Date of manufacture should be 1971, Very Good condition also lists @ $250(again, I'd be happy @ $350).

Okay, now you can tell us all what you REALLY paid for 'em...:D

Thanks Kor.

Let's just say I'm in them both at less than the stated values :D I seriously doubt I'll be getting rid of either of them though. I really like the model 19, it's just to bad about the pitting damage on it. I'll probably start looking for a local smith to do a hot reblue on it.

From what I've read on the 581 over at the Smith & Wesson forum, those that like the 581 REALLY like them, and they are very desireable among those people. I bought it just because I got a screaming deal on it, but the more I handle it the more I like it. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but points very naturally in my hand.

Thanks for the info.
