Looks run of the mill at first but it is the first year of production , with Ballard rifling ( I was told that the serial # of the rifle I have does not have Microgroove rifling and is only marked JM The story goes Marlin did not have a 45-70 micro groove tooling yet and wanted to get out the 1895 so the first couple thousand produced had Douglas made barrel blanks) . Well wait take a closer look at the original scope !

I have it out because I took off and stored the original Glenfield trash mount system. That there is a DNZ GameReaper mount system. The gun is now perfect. I took off the old Williams peep that was mounted there and the long stored 1972 Marlin Model 800 1.5-5X40 made in Light Optics Japan is as clear as a new low end Nikon and it has beautiful German #1 pickets- Amazing and it focus well for me with a good spot weld :)

The blue on this gun is still pretty good but the case hardened reciever has lost most of it's color and has a brown mottled patina. I left this gun out because I am gonna fire a couple hundred rounds of cowboy action loads I have extra. I am getting old and want to enjoy it !
This Marlin 27 action is a joy to behold and operate. The gun must have cost a fortune to make. I have a Marlin Model 24 Shotgun FWIW for Cowboy blackpowder shooting.

I had one of those original 1895's for many years. They came with curved hard plastic butt plates. Would get your attention with heavy loads. I don't care for THAT recoil pad, but putting one on it would be wise.

the pad was added 40 years ago, it is not hard yet and I probably will NOT be putting on a limbsaver ect. The LOP is a little long for me but I won't be getting bashed in the eye.

my marlin 95 in 45-70 was bought because the serial number is B001920 and that was my father,s birth year. i have killed 11 deer with it useing open sights and scoped. i shoot 350gr flat nose jacketed bullets at 1800fps. they don,t walk away when hit with that load.

They are sweet-shooters.

I have a 1922mfd .32-20 27-S that I lucked into a couple of years ago at an excellent price (due to the mess some jackleg made of it trying to mod it for pinch rings).

While it does a dandy job with the .32-20 cartridges that I load with Trailboss for my vintage revolvers, I also roll some rifle-only rounds with XTPs over IMR-4227.

It is very accurate with almost no recoil. Even my sister, who is recoil-averse, enjoys shooting the 27-S.

Good heavens those are beautiful! I often find myself irrationally loving gorgeous old wood and iron like that more than efficient, accurate, reliable modern stuff. [/Guilty Pleasure]

The curved butt plate was the recoil pad of yesteryear===>increased surface area on the shoulder.

I understand the reason, and am guilty myself of cutting stocks and adding pads many years ago. But I now regret it and cringe whenever I see a nice vintage gun that I or someone else altered.

I accumulate Winchester 88's, and when you find one in standard calibers in reasonable condition that the stock was cut and pad added, it reduces value about $300.
