Last week I went on a deer hunting trip in East Texas with my cousin and my father. My family owns 160 acres of land out to the East of Nacogdoches where we have hunted deer and hogs for years. My cousin has been hunting several times before, but had never killed a big game animal before this hunt.

On the second evening, he noticed a very large feral hog moving from some thick brush almost directly towards the stand that he was hunting from. He managed to get his rifle up without the hog seeing him and shot the hog at less than 10 yards. He was using a Ruger M77 in .30-06 with 180gr Remington Core Lokt bullets.

While no giant hog by any means, he weighed an honest 163 pounds live and was a true "wild boar." As you can imagine, my cousin Ted was pretty excited about how the hunt turned out. There is no experience quite like the first time.

You can read the full story at the link below with all the details if you're interested.

Nice pig...regardless the weight. Congratulations and Thank You guys for getting one more out of the population.

BTW, I live very near the area you were hunting...so you have done me (and my neighbors) a favor, I am sure.

Yeah, we're all about thinning their numbers up there. This is the third hog we shot on our land this year, which is by far the most we've ever had. We are going to keep doing our best with it, but I'm afraid that we are going to have more and more hogs and fewer and fewer deer in the future.
