Cowboy Action Shooting Equipment Poll

My previous SAA pistols were giving me fits so I finally got rid of them.
Now I'm looking at getting some good, solid, reliable, Ruger single action pistols.
Darn it though, I can't make up my mind between getting a pair of Blackhawks or a pair of the "new" Vaqueros.

(I plan on buying Stainless in .357 Magnum)

Neither of them are authentic "Cowboy" guns. But, I would get the Vaqueros simply because getting the Blackhawks limits you to shooting in the "modern" class. With the Vaqueros you can shoot Duelist, Gunfighter, Traditional etc. etc....

If those were the only two choices, I would go Vaquero. I thought I had read somewhere once in the last year that the Uberti cowboy guns were quite popular in the SASS and cowboy shoots. Does this ring true to anyone here that might know better?

I feel your pain. I just sold my SAA pistols. I won't say the brand, but with the hit I took, let's just say it rhymes with "Ouchos". Luckily, I had a backup set of CAS guns that I was really looking forward to using more anyway. The trusty, non-finicky Model 1895 Nagant shooting .32 S&W Long paired with the Ruger Blackhawk Bisley Hunter Shooting .44 Russian.

It's gonna be a while afore I ever get my traditional "irons" back, but until then, I have a spare Nagant for you if you are ever interested.

The New Vaqueros are, overall, fitted better than the larger-framed Ruger SA sixguns. I have read this several places, and felt it while handling them at a dealer, and also with two recent purchases, a Blackhawk Bisley (large frame) and a New Vaquero Montado. BTW, the Montado version is not SASS legit, with its grooved frontstrap, and perhaps the non-standard hammer too; not a problem for me, as I got it for general utility/carry.

I have to respectfully disagree. I have used NMBHs in .45 Colt and .357 for 7 yrs. I like being able to see the sights and I like being able to sight in with a screw driver rather than a hammer and file.

I have both and would hate to have to choose. I do like the New Vaquero's very much. If you are going 357 then I say get the Vaqueros. In 45 Colt I'd want both.

I voted Vaquero, I carry a 45 vaquero on my strong side and a 45 Bisley BH in my crossdraw.

Shoot what you want. The whole idea is to have fun.

Some have fun by being very precise in their costuming and equipment, others have fun by playing cowboy just like they did when they were eight years old. Your choice.

SASS has something called a "modern" category which allows the Ruger SAs with adjustable sites. They just have tighter rules on shooting one gun at a time.

I started out with Vaquero's and have recently added a NM Blackhawk convertible (looking for another BH if anyone has one) with the plans to shoot modern from time to time and also to be a backup to the Vaq's (not that they break very often).

If you are only casually into CAS get the BH's, if you get more serious you may want Vaquero's. JMHO.

If I had any experience with the Vaqueros, I'm sure I'd agree with the majority. But I just love my Blackhawk, so that is how I voted. I do think the Vs are beautiful guns though.
