When David Miller heard 9-year-old Ashton Crowe cry out for help, he didn't take time to find his shoes. The young man bolted out of his grandparents' house, down a gravel driveway, and kicked Ashton's attacker with his bare foot.

Although David, 16, could not tell exactly what kind of animal was biting Ashton about 6:30 a.m. Friday, he grabbed it by the neck, pinned it against the ground and told Ashton to run for safety. Ashton, who suffered leg wounds and severe damage to her toe from the coyote, sought shelter as David's grandfather, Howard Rochester, came down the driveway with a pistol.

"I was limping and running and went inside," recalled Ashton, who had been waiting for a school bus on Sutton Road, east of Pacolet.

Rochester fired a close-range shot into the coyote's stomach and it released itself from David's grasp, then charged Rochester and bit down on the barrel of Rochester's .22-caliber pistol. He fired and the animal jumped back and ran around a little more as Rochester fired until the trigger went "click."

The coyote then died in a nearby field, where it was taken away by Spartanburg County animal control agents, said Don Arnold, director of environmental enforcement.

Ashton said she originally thought it was a dog named Petey, but then the animal attacked and she screamed and kicked it a couple of times.

"(The coyote) got her toe really good," said Ashton's mother, Brandi Cantrell. "(Miller) took off and got it off her. I'm very thankful."

Rochester and David said they didn't feel like they had done anything heroic for their neighbor and friend Ashton, but Arnold said David's quick response saved Ashton from more severe injuries. She received treatment at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and then stopped by her school to briefly participate in class activities for Valentine's Day.

Arnold said the male coyote weighed 27 pounds, although adult males usually weigh between 30 and 50 pounds. He said agents sent the coyote's head to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control for tests, which came back positive for rabies.

Ashton and David will require a series of five to seven vaccinations over a 21-day period, and Petey will be impounded for 10 days during her treatment. Ashton and David were set to begin the vaccination process Friday evening.

Good job David.

good example of the proper mindset is JUST as important if not moreso than the toolbox you have.

This almost makes me wanna cry. I love this country way of life, no one in the city even knows their neighbor, much less cares about one screaming.

His parents did something right. A lot of kids his age wouldn't put that much effort into helping themselves.

Good job for the kid but couple of things kinda bug me:

1. the grandpa shot the coyote at VERY CLOSE DISTANCE while the boy was pinning it on the ground ? I wouldn't be comfortable unless i knew his shooting history/ ability. BUt then again, if the boy had let it loose prior, it'd be running around and tough to get a good shot in.

Last paragraph - why does petey have to be quarantined ?

I'd read this story on two different news sites. Not a SINGLE word about defending themselves with a gun. Never even mention the coyote leaving.

In case Petey got any of the coyote's saliva, Petey could end up rabid.

You don't take chances with rabies, thus the series of vaccinations for both the guy and the girl.

I would go into a tough situation with this young man any day.

What a hero.

My wife saw a coyote in the yard next door yesterday morning when she went to the mailbox to get the newspaper before daylight.

We live in the city, but with substantial woods to the rear and a river across the street.

Looks like I need to get a bow sometime soon.

It's probably like the story that used to be told by comedian Jerry Clower. Two hunters were hunting for raccoons at night. One thought he had one treed and went up into the tree after him, but it turned out to be a wildcat. He and the wildcat went round and round. Blood and fur flew, and the hunter begged his friend to “shoot this thing, shoot this thing!” The friend said, “I can’t shoot; I might hit you.” The hunter’s response was, “Well, shoot up in here amongst us; one of us needs some relief.”

The kid was probably glad to get that coyote off him no matter if bullets were flying close by him.

Given the state of most of today's youth (puzzyfied and worthless) I'll have to comment the young MAN for his actions which may have saved the girl from further serious injury....... As for the Grandfather, Get a BIGGER gun.... :D All in all, a good outcome despite the rabies shots yet to come....

Scary situation but sounds like everybody did the right thing. As to using the .22lr well he used what he had, the .22 in your hand is better than the 12 gauge in the safe in these situations.

Good on the young man and granddad.

welldoya, the Clower story made me laugh out loud, I just may have to dust off the old turntable and break out some vinyl records, haaaw.

This reminds me of a story from my youth. I had a neighbor with 2 kids a little younger than me, we were playing and the younger on spotted a black snake in the edge of the woods. I told Patrick it was cool,(the poor snake was not bothering anyone, and it was a big yard) but Brendan took of hollering for his Dad.

His Dad (then in law school and a rather high strung guy) came running out with his 22 revolver, got close and started blasting away at the snake, clearly scared to death, shot til click, click, click.

He hit the snake a few times, probably mortally, but it was not immediately dead. I walked over to my yard, got a hoe and came back and dispatched the critter.

Mr. Day was standing there breathing hard and shaking, frankly he was a lot more scary than the snake with that gun shaking all over the place. I'm guessing he hit 3 or 4 out of 10? shots.

Glad that the girl, the young man and ol' grandad are all ok.

Rabies shots are no fun, could of been worse though. Should of brought a lil more then a .22 that coyote was a fighter!
