pretty new to this, so it probably will not be my last question. i was reading up on the rules, and it looks like i can shoot animals to use as bait for coyotes. and it appears to me like they do a lot of their hunting at night. which leaves me wondering if i do shoot a critter or two for bait, is it going to be a waste of time, energy, and the critters life if i do not hunt at night? also, if i shoot something at first light, will the sound of the shot scare away the coyote for hours?

If you want to use bait i think you need to establish a location and keep it stocked with bait. Put it someplace that you can sneek up on to check within shooting range.
Rather than shoot what would have to be small animals check with some farmers and see if you can have their dead animals like pigs, sheep, and fowl or contact a butcher shot and get their bones.
Check you state laws first.

I kill hogs almost every day and leave them lay, sooner or later I drive up on a coyote or two eating on them and they become history too. my 2 worst pests and they kinda go hand in hand when it comes to thinning them out.

To answer your question about the shooting scaring them off for hours, in most cases it will. Shoot some bait BEFORE you go out on your intended coyote trip.

Also, if you plan to still hunt them, no need to buy an expensive call to start with. You can download mp3 files of different coyote calls, hook your ipod to a small amplifier, then to a small speaker. We set ours on a several minute delay in between the calls, and no matter if you're ready for it or not when the call goes off it will make you jump! Effective in bringing them in though.

Michigan law mandates only rimfire or shotgun (no slugs or buckshot allowed) at night. So you gotta be close. You can use whatever you want in daylight. My buddy keeps a bait pile at a corner of his property about 75 yards from his house and pots his varmints from a kitchen window...

sad to say, but most the electronic revaloution has passed me by. i wouldn't know an ipod if one was handed to me. i have a very simple cell phone (only because i have kids i need to keep track of), and this computer, other than that, i am pretty "old school". i bought a couple on rather inexpensive reed calls to start with. i must have done something right, as i have taken one, and almost (i admit it, i missed) a second one last week. if i get into it pretty heavy, i will probably watch for a used electronic call of some sort.
