Been looking for a coyote rifle for sometime now. I dont want a cheap gun but wouldn't want to go over $550- 600. I think I want either a savage or tikka. Can you help me make up my mind? I am also open to any other suggestions. I would like to get it in 22-250.

Thanks!

weatherby vanguard in .22-250, that a way you could buy some ammo with the savings.

My next gun purchase is going to be a ruger mini 14 tactical, one of the new ones with the thicker barrel and fixed synthetic stock. MSRP +/- $650. Accuracy reports seem to be acceptable for a general coyote gun. Plus, the carbines sure are handy as hell

I certainly agree on the 22-250, as it gives you an edge for the ones that stay out of 223 range.
I think the T. Center Venture offers the best bang for the buck. 5R rifling and a 1" accuracy guarantee under $500.

Whatever rifle you select, try to buy an American made model, and keep the jobs here.
America makes some great rifles.

I forgot to look at TC! You may have changed my mind there. Looks like im going to have to handle one tomorrow.

Scotts Outdoor Sports has Howa 1500 Ranchland Compacts on sale for $350 delivered to your FFL. They have a .223, a .243 and a .308. I don't know if they can get you 22-250 or not but at that price they are a good deal. They are on Gunsamerica. By the way a Vanguard is a Howa 1500.

I would snag a .243 over a 22 250 any day. I also am an Encore fan and you will get a lot more into an Encore for a single shot.

Worth looking at anyway.

Nothing wrong with a Vanguard or Howa 1500,but the TC Venture does what it promises, drive tacks. The bolt may be getting some use to it{60 degree lift},but IMO it is the new leader of best bang for the buck. After the rebate,I have $400 in mine, but I think the rebate was over at the end of Nov, 2010.

I own a fine 22-250 and I will admit it is sort of like shooting a laser beam - it's the flattest rifle I own :) But, if I already do not have it - I'd be looking at a .243. Using Hornady 58 V-Max will put you just a little behind the 22-250, but you can switch up to dear and other stuff that a 22 is not appropriate for, or in my state no legal for :(

243 is available in more gun models and is usually a very fine shooter :)

I've got a few rifles I can use for coyotes, but the one I usually grab is a All weather Ruger Hawkeye .204

Out of the box it was a 1/2" gun if you do your part with Federal Premium Ammo. Picked mine up two years ago on a clearance rack for 365.00, stupidly I didn't buy the .223 that was also sitting next to it.

We use 223 for our coyote rifles and with the Hornady 60 gr. V-Max it is all you need. If you reload like I do, 223 brass is everywhere and cheaper than 22-250 and a couple of my friends went from a 22-250 to 223 and they hunt a lot out in the Dakota's for coyotes and prairie dogs and it works just fine...

As for the Savage Edge/Axis being a great gun is a manner of opinion. I owned one for about 6 months and will not own or recommend it to anyone.

Nothing wrong with any of the above. I've not looked at Weatherbys but wouldn't rule them out. I came pretty close to buying a Savage 12FV in .22-250, it's a very nice rifle.

My boy has a Marlin XS7 in .243 win that I think will make a great coyote gun. I am loading 65gr. Vmax's @ 3500 fps that shoot great out of the gun and should do a number on a coyote. The rifle is around $330 and leaves room for a good scope to boot.

Where are you? How far are you shooting?

You don't need a 600yd tack driver if you're not shooting over 100yards. You probably don't NEED a gun that has a guarantee of 1" groups at 100 yards unless you're shooting out past a couple hundred yards. On the flipside, a 30-30 lever gun won't do you much good at extended ranges.

I shoot four guns on coyote..depending on my mood and where I'm going. At my farm, where the longest shot will be 200 or so yards, I usually have a 94 Win in 30-30 and cast boolits at 1300 fps (quiet and accurate). I might have my contender carbine in 223 but it is louder. If I'm mowing, a .357 686 is in a holster and if I'm out on a friend's pasture/beanfields a 77 Ruger in 243 is the ticket.
A 22 mag would work under a century distance. 17hmr failed me three times on chest shots so I don't recommend it.

In my opinion, the savage 22-250 with the accutrigger is perfect. I have one and it has never failed and shoots great. Drop is roughly 4 inches from 100-500 yards. They tend to run between $550-$650 and in my opinion it is worth it.

Wow, you must be generating about 20,000 FPS at the muzzle. My Weatherby Mark V in .257 Wea Mag, handloaded to 3800 FPS and zeroed at 300 yards, dropped about 19" at 500 yards.

Well, I like the idea of keeping 'options open', so the .243 suggestion sure makes sense to me. But that's my logic at work.

The reason I decided to post was that I just wanted to share that I am super happy with the out of the box savage I got. Maybe others wouldn't like it, but I sure do. :D

(in case it matters, it's accu-trigger & stock, and mine is chambered in .308)
