An AR seems like it would be a great all around rifle for what you are talking about. I ordered the parts for my build for around $525 (minus the sights & the upper+parts kit was on sale) and the .223 is great for small game. You can pretty inexpensively convert it to a .22 for cheap ammo training and get a different upper for a lot less than another rifle should you decide to want a bigger caliber. AR's are a lot of fun but there are a lot of great rifles out there.
